TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) measures academic English for university study. The TOEFL iBT tests Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing, and is scored out of 120. It is one of the most widely accepted tests for admission, particularly in the USA, and is also recognised by many universities in the UK, Canada, Australia and Europe.
| Skills tested | Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing |
| Score range | 0-120 (each section out of 30) |
| Mode of test | At a test centre or at home, depending on availability |
| Used for | University admission (study), especially the USA |
| Score validity | Usually 2 years (confirm with the university) |
Minimum scores are set by each university and program and vary widely. Confirm the exact requirement on your target program's admissions page before relying on any figure.
How Cosmos coaching is structured
- University shortlist first. We confirm the TOEFL score your target institutions require, so you study toward a clear target.
- Skill diagnosis. A baseline across the four sections shows where your points are being lost.
- Academic technique. TOEFL rewards note-taking, integrated tasks and structured responses; we drill the methods that lift section scores.
- Full-length mock tests. Timed practice under real conditions builds stamina and consistency across the whole test.
Match your TOEFL target to real universities
A Cosmos consultant can confirm which institutions your score qualifies you for, and what to target if it falls short.
Check Your Options NowDidn't get the TOEFL score you needed?
- Retake with a focused plan. Review which section cost you the points before rebooking, rather than re-sitting the whole test blind.
- Consider alternate institutions or courses. Many strong programs accept a lower score than the most competitive options.
- Check whether another test suits you. IELTS and the Duolingo English Test are also widely accepted; some students score meaningfully higher on one than another.
TOEFL FAQs
What is TOEFL used for?
TOEFL iBT is used mainly for university admission. It is accepted by thousands of universities worldwide, and is especially common for studying in the USA, alongside institutions in the UK, Canada, Australia and Europe. Your student visa will usually rely on the admission the university offers once your TOEFL score meets their requirement.
Is TOEFL accepted for Canada PR?
TOEFL is not on IRCC's list of approved tests for Canada Express Entry. For Canada permanent residence you would use CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training or PTE Core. TOEFL is used for study, so it suits university admission rather than economic immigration. Ask a Cosmos consultant which test your pathway needs.
What is a good TOEFL score?
TOEFL iBT is scored out of 120. Universities set their own minimums, which commonly sit in the 80s to 100+ range for competitive programs, but this varies widely by institution and course. Always confirm the exact requirement on your target program's admissions page.
How long is a TOEFL score valid?
TOEFL scores are generally valid for 2 years from the test date. Check that your score will still be valid on the date you plan to apply or enrol, not just when you sit the test.
