There is no easy route — there are three real ones. Mostly no — and the wording matters. New Zealand grants a Resident Visa first; the Permanent Resident Visa follows after roughly two years of holding residence. The only direct-to-residence routes from overseas are a Green List Tier 1 occupation with an accredited-employer job offer, or the investor categories. Everyone else builds residence in stages.
The adverts offering "direct NZ PR from India" gloss over exactly this. The genuinely fast lane is real but narrow: registered nurses, most engineering disciplines and several other Green List Tier 1 occupations can go straight to residence with the right job offer. You need six points for the Skilled Migrant Category: three to six from a qualification, New Zealand occupational registration or income above the median wage, topped up by years of skilled work in New Zealand. From August 2026 the maximum NZ experience needed drops from three years to two, and two new pathways open.

Tier 1 means Straight to Residence — registered nurses, most engineering disciplines and other key health roles can apply for residence immediately with a job offer from an accredited employer. Tier 2 means Work to Residence after two years in the role. Health professions need New Zealand registration before either tier helps.
One confusion worth clearing: the Green List is not the same as the National Occupation List that gained 47 occupations on 9 March 2026 — that change widened work-visa eligibility, not residence. It turns on whether you can land a job offer. Australia's points-tested 189 and 190 visas can be won without an employer; New Zealand runs on job offers, but Green List roles skip any selection pool and the blanket wage floor went in March 2025. Both things are true. New Zealand opened up — the blanket median-wage hiring floor went in March 2025, 47 occupations joined the National Occupation List in March 2026, and the Skilled Migrant Category eases in August 2026. It also stayed selective: English requirements for lower-skilled roles, a six-point residence threshold, and everything still runs through a job offer.
Offshore hiring is real but competitive. Target the 27,000-plus accredited employers — only they can sponsor an Accredited Employer Work Visa — rewrite your CV to New Zealand norms, and lead with registration if you hold it. Nobody can promise you a job offer; anyone selling one should be treated as a scam.
There is no blanket salary floor any more — the median-wage rule for Accredited Employer Work Visa hiring was removed on 10 March 2025, leaving minimum wage and the market rate for the role. The immigration median wage hasn't disappeared, though: since 9 March 2026 it sits at NZ$35.00 an hour and still feeds Skilled Migrant income points and family-support thresholds.

Partners and dependent children of AEWV holders in skill-level 1–3 or Green List jobs can come, provided you meet the partner-support income threshold — NZ$28.00 an hour for skill 1–3 roles, NZ$52.50 for Green List roles, from March 2026. Partner work rights depend on your category, so check before resigning anything.
Yes — the Parent Boost Visitor Visa, open since September 2025, allows a five-year stay extendable towards ten. The sponsoring child must earn the median wage (1.5 times jointly), met in two of the last three NZ tax years — thresholds rose on 30 April 2026 — or parents can self-fund at roughly NZ$33,663 a year. Health insurance is mandatory.
Yes, if you choose the course strategically. The pathway is study, then a post-study work visa of up to three years, then skilled work towards the Skilled Migrant Category. From August 2026, NZ qualifications earn extra recognition and the NZ work-experience requirement drops to two years. Courses aligned to Green List fields lead somewhere; others can dead-end.
Under Active Investor Plus: the Growth category needs NZ$5 million invested for three years with just 21 days in New Zealand; Balanced needs NZ$10 million over five years with 105 days. There is no English test. By May 2026 the reset programme had 288 approvals and roughly NZ$1.69 billion committed.

Since June 2025, holders of most recognised Indian bachelor's degrees and above no longer need an International Qualification Assessment for points or visa purposes — a genuine simplification that removes months and real money from the process. Degrees outside the recognised list still need assessment, so confirm your university's status before filing.
The Skilled Migrant Category runs on a six-point threshold. Points come from your qualification, occupational registration and income, with skilled New Zealand work experience added if you need it — for example, a recognised occupational registration, a doctorate, or a job paying at least three times the median wage can reach six points on their own. Reaching six points makes you eligible to be selected; a job offer from an accredited employer still anchors the pathway.

Yes. The Accredited Employer Work Visa starts with a job offer from an Immigration New Zealand-accredited employer who has completed a successful Job Check for the role. The job must be full-time and meet the pay and skill conditions for the occupation. No one can sell you a guaranteed job offer — the offer has to be real and the employer genuinely accredited.
The Green List is a two-tier list of high-demand occupations. Tier 1 roles offer a Straight to Residence pathway, while Tier 2 roles offer a Work to Residence pathway after a qualifying period in the job. It spans healthcare, engineering, construction, ICT, education and primary industries, and Immigration New Zealand updates it periodically — so confirm your occupation's current tier before planning around it.
Generally yes, depending on your level of study. From 3 November 2025 the standard in-study work entitlement rose to up to 25 hours per week during term time (up from 20), with full-time work permitted during scheduled holidays.
