Mostly no — and the wording matters. New Zealand grants a Resident Visa first; the Permanent Resident Visa follows after roughly two years of holding residence. You need six points for the Skilled Migrant Category: three to six from a qualification, New Zealand occupational registration or income above the median wage, topped up by years of skilled work in New Zealand. New Zealand opened up — the blanket median-wage hiring floor went in March 2025, 47 occupations joined the National Occupation List in March 2026, and the Skilled Migrant Category eases in August 2026. It also stayed selective: English requirements for lower-skilled roles, a six-point residence threshold, and everything still runs through a job offer.

Yes — the Parent Boost Visitor Visa, open since September 2025, allows a five-year stay extendable towards ten. The sponsoring child must earn the median wage (1.5 times jointly), met in two of the last three NZ tax years — thresholds rose on 30 April 2026 — or parents can self-fund at roughly NZ$33,663 a year. Health insurance is mandatory.
