CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program) is an English test built specifically for Canadian immigration and citizenship. It is fully computer-delivered and sat in a single session, which many candidates prefer to a separate in-person speaking interview. IRCC accepts CELPIP-General for permanent residence and CELPIP-General LS for citizenship.
| Skills tested | CELPIP-General: Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking |
| Citizenship version | CELPIP-General LS: Listening and Speaking only |
| Mode of test | Fully computer-delivered in one sitting |
| Used for | Canada permanent residence (General) and citizenship (General LS) |
| Score reporting | Mapped to the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) |
| Validity for IRCC | Less than 2 years old at profile and at PR submission |
Requirements and CLB thresholds are set by IRCC and the specific program, and can change. Confirm the current rule on the official IRCC website, or ask a Cosmos consultant to check it for your route.
Why candidates choose CELPIP for Canada
- Built for Canada. The content, accents and spelling are North American, which some candidates find more natural than a test designed for multiple countries.
- One sitting, one computer. All sections, including Speaking, are done at the computer in a single appointment.
- Clear mapping to CLB. Scores translate directly to the Canadian Language Benchmark IRCC uses for Express Entry and provincial programs.
Find the CLB your Canada route needs
A Cosmos consultant can map your program to the CLB that clears it and build a CELPIP prep plan around that target.
Check Your Route NowHow Cosmos coaching is structured
- Target first. We confirm the CLB your Canada route needs before you study, so your prep has a clear finish line.
- Skill diagnosis. A baseline shows whether Writing, Speaking, Reading or Listening is the section to focus on.
- Format familiarity. CELPIP's on-screen tasks and timing are specific; practising them removes surprises on test day.
- Timed mock tests. Full-length practice under real conditions builds the consistency that produces a reliable score.
CELPIP FAQs
Is CELPIP accepted for Canada PR?
Yes. CELPIP-General is one of the language tests IRCC lists as approved for Express Entry and permanent residence, alongside IELTS General Training, PTE Core and the French tests. Confirm the current rules on the official IRCC website before booking.
What is the difference between CELPIP-General and CELPIP-General LS?
CELPIP-General tests all four skills (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) and is the version used for permanent residence. CELPIP-General LS tests only Listening and Speaking and is used for Canadian citizenship. Choose the version that matches your goal.
Is CELPIP only for Canada?
CELPIP is designed specifically for Canadian immigration and citizenship and is fully computer-delivered. If your destination is Canada, it is a natural choice; if you are also considering other countries, IELTS or PTE may give you more flexibility.
How long are CELPIP results valid?
For IRCC, your language-test results must be less than two years old when you complete your Express Entry profile and when you submit your PR application. Always check that your score will still be valid on your intended submission date.
