PTE Core is Pearson's computer-based English test for economic immigration. IRCC lists it as one of the approved tests for Express Entry, alongside CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training, and the French tests TEF Canada and TCF Canada. It is important to take PTE Core and not PTE Academic: PTE Academic is built for study routes, while PTE Core is the version IRCC accepts for permanent residence.
| Skills tested | Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing |
| Mode of test | Computer-based at designated test centres, including Dubai |
| Used for | Canada Express Entry and many provincial economic programs |
| Score reporting | Mapped to the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) IRCC uses |
| Results | Typically available within a few days of the test |
| Validity for IRCC | Less than 2 years old at profile and at PR submission |
Score minimums and CLB thresholds are set by IRCC and the specific program, and they can change. Confirm the current requirement on the official IRCC website, or let a Cosmos consultant check it for your route.
How Cosmos coaching is structured
The score you need depends on your program and the CRS points you are chasing, so we start from your target, not a generic class.
- Target first. We map your Canada route to the CLB level that clears it, so you know exactly what to aim for before you study.
- Skill diagnosis. A baseline across Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing shows which section is holding your score back.
- Format and timing drills. PTE Core is computer-scored, so familiarity with the task types and pacing matters as much as raw English.
- Full-length practice. Timed mock tests under real conditions build the consistency that produces a reliable band on test day.

- Retake with a focused plan. Review which section cost you the band before you rebook, rather than sitting the whole test again blind.
- Recheck your CRS maths. Sometimes a one-band gain in a single skill is all your profile needs. We can show you where the points actually move.
- Consider whether another accepted test suits you. CELPIP-General and IELTS General Training are also accepted by IRCC, and some candidates score better on one than another.
PTE Core FAQs
Is PTE Core accepted for Canada PR?
Yes. PTE Core is one of the language tests IRCC lists as approved for Express Entry, alongside CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training, TEF Canada and TCF Canada. Note that it is PTE Core, not PTE Academic, that IRCC accepts for economic immigration. Always confirm current rules on the official IRCC website before booking.
What is the difference between PTE Core and PTE Academic?
PTE Academic is used mainly for university admission and study routes. PTE Core is the version Pearson built for economic immigration, and it is the one IRCC accepts for Express Entry. If your goal is Canada PR, you need PTE Core.
How long are PTE Core results valid for Express Entry?
IRCC requires your language-test results to be less than two years old both when you complete your Express Entry profile and when you submit your application for permanent residence. Plan your test date so your score is still valid at the submission stage, not just today.
Can Cosmos guarantee a PTE Core score?
No honest provider can guarantee a test score. What structured coaching does is sharpen the four skills the test measures, teach the test format and timing, and build consistency through full-length practice so you walk in prepared for the band your program needs.
