What OET is

OET (Occupational English Test) is an English-language test designed for healthcare professionals. Unlike general English tests, its Writing and Speaking sections are built around real clinical scenarios for your profession, so a nurse, doctor, dentist or pharmacist is tested on the language they actually use at work. OET reports that it is recognised by hundreds of boards, councils, universities and governments worldwide.

Who recognises OET

Recognition is set by each regulator and can change, so always confirm with the specific board for your profession. Broadly, OET is recognised by:

  • United Kingdom — the nursing and midwifery and medical regulators accept OET for registration; it is also used for some UK healthcare worker visa routes.
  • Australia — AHPRA and its health profession boards recognise OET, and the Department of Home Affairs accepts it for visa purposes.
  • Ireland — the nursing and medical regulators recognise OET.
  • New Zealand — healthcare councils recognise OET, and it is used by Immigration New Zealand.

Which OET delivery mode (test centre or online) your regulator accepts also varies. Confirm both the accepted mode and the minimum grade with your board before booking.

How Cosmos coaching is structured

  1. Profession and target. We confirm your regulator's accepted test and required grade before you start, so your prep is aimed at the right standard.
  2. Clinical Writing and Speaking. These sub-tests are where many candidates lose marks; we drill the profession-specific tasks directly.
  3. Listening and Reading technique. Targeted practice on healthcare-context materials builds speed and accuracy.
  4. Full-length mock tests. Timed practice under real conditions builds the consistency that produces a reliable grade.

OET FAQs

Who accepts OET?

OET is recognised by healthcare boards, councils and governments in many countries, including the UK (nursing and medical regulators), Australia (AHPRA and, for visa purposes, the Department of Home Affairs), Ireland and New Zealand. OET itself reports recognition by hundreds of organisations worldwide. Each body sets its own minimum, so confirm the requirement with your specific regulator.

Is OET only for healthcare workers?

OET is the English test built for healthcare. Its Writing and Speaking tasks use real clinical scenarios for professions such as nursing, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and physiotherapy. If you are registering as a healthcare professional, OET is usually the most relevant option.

Is OET accepted for Canada PR?

OET is not on IRCC's list of approved tests for Canada Express Entry. For Canada permanent residence you would use CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training or PTE Core. OET is for healthcare registration and for immigration to countries such as the UK and Australia. Ask a Cosmos consultant which test your specific pathway needs.

Can Cosmos guarantee an OET grade?

No honest provider can guarantee a grade. Coaching sharpens the four sub-tests, drills the profession-specific Writing and Speaking tasks, and builds exam familiarity so you are prepared for the grade your regulator requires.
