Australia Visit Visa from Dubai & UAE: Subclass 600 Guide

Most UAE residents who want to visit Australia apply for the Visitor visa (subclass 600) online through ImmiAccount, while they are outside Australia. That is the route for UAE and other GCC passport holders, and for most residents holding Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian and other passports common in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.

Which Australian visitor visa do you need?

Australia has three visitor visas: the Visitor visa (subclass 600), the Electronic Travel Authority or ETA (subclass 601) and the eVisitor (subclass 651). Your passport decides which ones are open to you. Living in the UAE does not change that.

UAE and GCC passport holders: subclass 600

The ETA and the eVisitor are only for citizens of countries that Home Affairs names on each visa page. We checked both lists on 26 September 2026. The United Arab Emirates is not on either list, and neither are Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain or Oman. If you hold one of these passports, apply for the subclass 600.

Holders of European, US, Canadian and some Asian passports

If you have a second passport, check it before you apply. The eVisitor is for citizens of 36 European countries, including the UK (British Citizen passports). The ETA covers most of the same European countries plus Brunei, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and the United States, and it is applied for through the Australian ETA App. An ETA lets you visit as often as you wish in a 12-month period and stay up to 3 months each time.

Two exceptions apply even if your passport is on a list. Home Affairs says that if you have a criminal conviction in any country, you should apply for a subclass 600 and provide evidence about it. The same goes if you have previously failed to meet the health requirement. You can confirm your options on the Home Affairs Explore visa options tool.

The five subclass 600 streams, and which apply to UAE residents

Documents checklist for a subclass 600 from the UAE

Home Affairs asks you to include as much information as possible, and it warns that it may decide your application without asking for anything more. Treat your first upload as the complete file.

Identity. The passport pages showing your photo, personal details and issue and expiry dates. Add a national identity card if you have one, and proof of any change of name. If you plan to renew your passport, do it before you apply. We also suggest adding your UAE residence visa and Emirates ID to show where you live.
Money for the trip. Home Affairs lists itemised personal bank statements for a 3-month period, pay slips, audited accounts, tax records, term deposits and credit card statements as examples.
Reasons to return. A letter from your employer stating you plan to return to your job, proof of study, immediate family at home, or property and other major assets. From the UAE, a salary certificate and an employer letter showing approved leave and your return date are the usual way to show this.
An invitation, if you are visiting someone. A letter from your relative or friend in Australia giving your relationship, the purpose and length of the visit, and whether you will stay with them. If they are paying for your stay, include proof of their funds.
Your plans. A short itinerary and where you will stay. Reservations are enough at this stage (see the travel warning below).
Character. Any military service record or discharge papers. Home Affairs may ask for a police certificate.
Children under 18. A birth certificate showing both parents' names, plus consent (Form 1229 or a statutory declaration) from anyone with legal custody of the child who is not travelling with them.
Translations. Arabic and other non-English documents must be translated into English, and you upload both versions. Translators outside Australia don't need to be accredited, but each translation must show their full name, address, phone number and language qualifications.

How much money should your bank statements show?

Home Affairs does not publish a minimum balance for a visitor visa, so be wary of anyone quoting one. The rule is that you must have, or have access to, enough money to support yourself while you are in Australia. In practice the question is whether your statements make sense: a balance that fits the trip, salary credits that match your salary certificate, and no unexplained large deposits. If family is paying, include their statements too.

Travel and health insurance

Insurance is not always a visa requirement, but Home Affairs is clear that visitors are liable for all their healthcare costs in Australia and strongly recommends adequate health insurance. Some visas are granted with condition 8501, which requires you to keep adequate health insurance for your stay.

How to apply from Dubai or Abu Dhabi, step by step

Check your passport. Make sure it will stay valid for the trip. Renew it first if you are planning to.
Pick the stream. For most trips this is the Tourist stream (apply outside Australia). If you hold a second passport, check ETA or eVisitor eligibility first.
Gather, translate and scan your documents. Home Affairs wants colour scans or photos that are clear and legible, with a multi-page document saved as one file.
Apply in ImmiAccount. Log in or create an account, complete the form and attach your documents. Each family member needs a separate application, including children listed in a parent's passport, but submit family applications together.
Pay the visa application charge shown in ImmiAccount. Home Affairs will not process the application until it is paid. Health checks, police certificates and biometrics can carry separate costs.
Give biometrics and have health examinations if asked. See the next section.
Wait outside Australia. You must be outside Australia when the decision is made. If Home Affairs asks for more information, upload it in ImmiAccount as soon as you can.
Read the decision letter. It gives your grant number, start date and conditions. There is no passport label; check your conditions in VEVO.

Biometrics in Dubai and Abu Dhabi

Not everyone is asked for biometrics. Home Affairs will tell you if you need to provide them, by sending a letter headed Requirement to provide personal identifiers. Check the reference number (VLN) on that letter. If it starts with AUI, you may be able to complete the identity check on your phone with the Australian Immi App. If it does not, you must attend an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre, and the letter explains how to book.

Processing times, and why you shouldn't book non-refundable travel yet

We have stopped printing fixed processing figures on this page because they change month to month. Home Affairs publishes a visa processing time guide based on recently decided applications, and it describes that figure as a guide only and not specific to your application. Check it on the day you apply.

The more important rule is about travel. Home Affairs says: “Do not arrange to travel to Australia until we let you know, in writing, that we have granted you the visa.” Refundable flight holds and hotel reservations are fine for your itinerary. Non-refundable tickets, prepaid tours and cruise deposits are money at risk until the grant arrives.

What makes a subclass 600 application stronger

A travel history you can show. Copies of earlier UK, Schengen, US, Canadian or Australian visas that you used and left on time.
One clear purpose. Your cover letter, itinerary and invitation should tell the same story.
Documented ties. Approved leave, a job to return to, family, a lease or property, children in school here.
Finances that match. Salary certificate, pay slips and bank statements should line up with each other.
Full disclosure. Declare earlier refusals, overstays and convictions anywhere in the world, and explain them.

Common refusal reasons and how to address them

Weak ties to the UAE. A short employment history, no leave letter, and no family or property here can read as a risk that you won't leave Australia. The fix is evidence: an employer letter with approved leave and a return date, a tenancy contract, and proof of family and commitments in the UAE.
Finances that don't add up. Large recent deposits with no source, balances that don't fit the stated salary, or pay slips that differ from the employment letter all draw questions. Explain any unusual transaction in writing and show where the money came from.
Earlier refusals not disclosed. This is the most serious of the four. Home Affairs warns that giving false or misleading information or bogus documents can lead to refusal, and in some cases a bar on being granted another visa for a period. A previous refusal that is declared and explained is a far more manageable problem.
A purpose that contradicts the documents. A business-meeting letter attached to a Tourist stream application, or an itinerary that doesn't match the stated reason for the trip, will be noticed. Choose the stream that matches what you will actually do.

Refused before? Reapplying or seeking review

Start with the refusal letter. Home Affairs says it will tell you in writing why it refused the visa and whether you have a right to a review of the decision. If a review right exists, the letter explains how and by when. If you apply again, declare the earlier refusal and answer each stated reason with new evidence. Sending the same documents a second time rarely changes the result.

How do I apply for an Australia tourist visa from the UAE?

Apply online through ImmiAccount for the Visitor visa (subclass 600), Tourist stream (apply outside Australia). Attach your documents, pay the charge shown, give biometrics if asked, then wait outside Australia for the written decision.

Can UAE residents of any nationality apply for an Australia visit visa from Dubai?

Yes. The Tourist stream is applied for online from outside Australia, so you can apply while living in the UAE whatever your nationality. Your passport decides whether you can use an ETA or eVisitor instead.

Do UAE passport holders need a visa for Australia, or can they use an ETA?

They need a visa. When we checked the Home Affairs lists on 26 September 2026, the UAE was not on the ETA (subclass 601) or eVisitor (subclass 651) list, so Emirati citizens apply for the Visitor visa (subclass 600).

How long does an Australia visit visa from Dubai take?

It varies. Check the Home Affairs processing time guide on the day you apply; Home Affairs says it is a guide only. Don't book non-refundable travel until you have the grant in writing.

Do I need biometrics for an Australian visa in Dubai or Abu Dhabi?

Only if Home Affairs asks, by letter. If the reference starts with AUI you may be able to use the Australian Immi App; otherwise you attend an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre.

How much money do I need in my bank account for an Australian tourist visa?

There is no published minimum. You must have, or have access to, enough money to support yourself during your stay, shown through documents such as 3 months of itemised bank statements and pay slips.

How long can I stay in Australia on a visitor visa? Can I extend it?

For the Tourist stream, Home Affairs generally grants a stay of 3 months and may grant up to 12 months in certain circumstances. You can't extend the visa. To stay longer you must apply for another visa while in Australia, which is only possible if your visa does not carry a condition such as 8503 No Further Stay.

Can I work or study on an Australian visitor visa?

You can't work on a Visitor visa, although some volunteer work may be possible. You can study or train for up to 3 months. If work or long-term study is the real goal, look at a different visa, such as those on our Australia working visa page.

My Australia visa was refused. Can I apply again?

Read the refusal letter first: it gives the reasons and says whether you have a right to a review. If you apply again, declare the refusal and answer each reason with new evidence.
