A hard limit means you cannot apply or be invited above that age. Points mean you can still qualify, but you need more from other factors.

Canada: age points in Express Entry

IRCC does not set an age limit on its CRS page, and age points reach zero at 45. The grid below is the core human capital age score.

A single applicant aged 29 scores 110 for age and one aged 35 scores 77, which is 33 points less from the same profile. That gap has to come from somewhere else: language, education, work experience or a provincial nomination. Age is one block of the score, so use the Canada PR points calculator or the CRS guide for UAE residents to see the whole picture.

For the Federal Skilled Worker Program, IRCC’s separate 100-point selection grid gives age a maximum of 12 points and you need 67 to qualify for the program before you enter the pool.

Australia: under 45 to be invited, and points that step down at 33 and 40

Home Affairs’ Skilled Independent (subclass 189) page says “You must be under 45 to be invited.” The points table is read at the time of invitation, so the birthday that matters is the one before the round in which you could be invited.

Age at time of invitationPoints (189, 190 and 491)
At least 18 but less than 2525
At least 25 but less than 3330
At least 33 but less than 4025
At least 40 but less than 4515
45 or olderNo points; the 189 page says you must be under 45 to be invited

Turning 33 costs 5 points and turning 40 costs 10 more. The 190 eligibility page says “You must be aged under 45 when we invite you to apply” and the 491 page says you must be “aged under 45 to be invited”. Both add that you can still apply if you turn 45 after the invitation, but if you turn 45 after submitting your EOI and before an invitation you will not be invited. Confirm the age rule with the nominating state as well. Round dates and cut-offs are on our SkillSelect invitation rounds page, and the full test is in the Australia skilled migration guide.

New Zealand: 55 or younger when you apply

Immigration New Zealand lists the age rule among the requirements for all Skilled Migrant Category pathways: you must be aged 55 or younger when you apply, and it checks your identity document to confirm your age. Age earns no points in the Points-based pathway, where points come from qualifications, occupational registration, income and skilled work experience in New Zealand.

Your partner and dependent children can be included; children must be 24 or younger. See the New Zealand skilled migration guide and the New Zealand points calculator.

United Kingdom: no age test for Skilled Worker

The GOV.UK Skilled Worker pages list what decides eligibility: an approved UK employer, a certificate of sponsorship, a job on the eligible occupations list, a minimum salary and knowledge of English. They list no age limit and no age points. The visa is tied to the job, so the practical questions are the sponsor, the occupation code and the salary. See the UK Skilled Worker visa page and the UK points calculator.

Germany: age scores on the Opportunity Card

Section 20b of the Residence Act (Aufenthaltsgesetz) sets the points for the Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte). Two of the scored items are age-based: points if you are not older than 35 when you apply, and points if you are older than 35 but not older than 40. Applicants over 40 get no age points.

The statute leaves the point values and the minimum total to a table in an annex, which the federal government can change by regulation. We did not print those numbers because we could not read the annex from an official source today. Check the current table before you decide whether being over 40 puts the card out of reach. Our Opportunity Card and Germany from Dubai pages cover the rest of the route.

If you are close to an age line

Check which date the rule uses before you plan. Australia reads your age at invitation, so a round that falls after your 33rd or 40th birthday scores lower. New Zealand and Germany read it when you apply. Canada’s CRS grid page does not say which date it uses, so confirm with IRCC for your own profile.

Send us your date of birth, occupation and English result and a consultation can map them against the next round or intake for each country. We cannot move a birthday or promise an outcome, but the order in which you do the English test, the skills assessment and the application can matter near an age line.

Questions we get about age and migration

Am I too old to immigrate to Canada?

IRCC's Comprehensive Ranking System grid sets no age cut-off. Age earns points, from 110 at ages 20 to 29 (single applicant) down to 0 at 45 and over, so an older applicant needs more points from language, education and work experience. The grid is from an IRCC page dated 16 October 2026.

What is the age limit for Australian PR?

For the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189), Home Affairs says you must be under 45 to be invited. The points table scores age at 25 for ages 18 to 24, 30 for 25 to 32, 25 for 33 to 39 and 15 for 40 to 44, with no points from 45. Home Affairs' 190 and 491 eligibility pages also require you to be under 45 when invited, and their points tables use the same age bands.

Is there an age limit for New Zealand residence?

Yes. Immigration New Zealand says all Skilled Migrant Category pathways require you to be aged 55 or younger when you apply, and it checks your identity document to confirm your age. Age is not one of the points factors in the Points-based pathway.

Is there an age limit for the UK Skilled Worker visa?

The GOV.UK Skilled Worker eligibility page lists a sponsoring employer, a certificate of sponsorship, an eligible job, a minimum salary and English language. It lists no age limit or age points. The conditions that decide the outcome are the job, the sponsor and the pay.

Does Germany have an age limit for skilled migration?

The Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) scores age: points are given if you are not older than 35 when you apply, and points are given if you are older than 35 but not older than 40 (section 20b of the Residence Act). Nothing is scored above 40. The point values and the minimum total are in an annex to the Act that the government can change by regulation, so check the current annex before you plan around it.

At what birthday do I lose points?

In the Canadian CRS, age points start to fall at 30 (from 110 to 105 for a single applicant) and fall every year after that. In the Australian points test they drop at 33 (from 30 to 25) and at 40 (from 25 to 15), and Australia counts your age at the time of invitation.
