CRS Score Explained: Where a UAE Professional’s Points Come From

If you hold, or plan to open, an Express Entry profile from the UAE, the number to understand in 2026 is not only your CRS score but which rounds that score can reach. The points grid has barely changed in years. The way IRCC uses it has: since 25 March 2025 a job offer earns no points, and none of the 49 rounds held between 1 January and 19 August 2026 was a general round. Below we set out where a typical UAE profile’s points come from, which single change moves the total most, and which 2026 rounds each score could have reached.

How the 1,200 points are split

IRCC scores every profile out of 1,200 across four blocks. Blocks A to C are capped at 600 between them and cover the applicant, the accompanying partner and the combinations between education, experience and language. Block D holds the additional points, including the 600-point provincial nomination.

Where a UAE professional’s points really come from

The profile we assess most often in Dubai and Abu Dhabi is a single applicant aged 32, holding a master’s degree covered by an ECA, with five or more years of skilled work in the Gulf and no Canadian study or work. The table scores that profile three times. Only the English result changes between the columns.

Moving from CLB 8 to CLB 9 adds 32 core points. Both transferability tables also unlock their full 50 only at CLB 9 in all four skills, so the same move adds a further 50, for a total of 82 points from one higher test result. In IELTS General Training, CLB 9 means Listening 8.0 and 7.0 in Reading, Writing and Speaking. On CELPIP-General it means 9 in each skill. On PTE Core it means 84 to 88 in Speaking, 82 to 88 in Listening, 78 to 87 in Reading and 88 to 89 in Writing.

Another year of Gulf experience adds nothing for this profile. Foreign work experience scores only through the transferability table, which reaches its maximum at three years, so an applicant with five years already holds every point that experience can earn at their language level. A retake that lifts every skill to CLB 9 is worth 82 points; an extra year of work is worth none and brings the next age band a year closer.

Age points fall each year. Holding everything else at the CLB 9 line, the same profile scores 453 at 32, 420 at 38, 409 at 40 and 376 at 43.

What moves the number, and what does not

A spouse who also tests

Married applicants are scored on the lower core columns, so the same 32-year-old with an accompanying partner has 327 core points at CLB 9 rather than 353. A partner with a bachelor’s degree earns 8 points back, and a partner at CLB 7 or 8 in all four skills earns 12 (CLB 9 earns 20). The couple’s total is around 447 with a partner test, or 435 without one.

Couples often ask which of them should be the principal applicant. On the married column, CLB 9 earns the principal 29 points per skill; the same CLB 9 earns a spouse 5 per skill. The partner with the stronger English result usually leads, and the other still contributes an ECA and a language test worth up to 40 points between them. Both arrangements can be scored on the calculator before the profile is submitted.

French as a second language

NCLC 7 in all four French skills, alongside CLB 5 or better in English, earns 50 additional points. It also earns second-language points in block A: 3 per skill at NCLC 7 or 8, and 6 at NCLC 9. The single applicant at 453 would move to about 515. NCLC 7 in every skill is also the entry requirement for the French-language proficiency category, whose 2026 cut-offs ranged from 382 to 420.

Canadian study or work

A Canadian post-secondary credential of one or two years adds 15 additional points; three years or longer adds 30. One year of skilled Canadian work adds 40 core points for a single applicant, unlocks further transferability points and brings the profile into the Canadian Experience Class rounds, which in 2026 cut off between 507 and 523.

A provincial nomination

A provincial or territorial nomination adds 600 additional points. PNP rounds in 2026 have cut off between 708 and 805, which corresponds to a base score of 108 to 205 before the nomination is added.

A job offer (no longer)

We are still asked regularly whether a job offer adds CRS points. Since 25 March 2025 it does not: IRCC removed job-offer points from every profile in the pool, current and future. An offer can still form part of your eligibility and should be listed in the profile. It should not be paid for on the understanding that it will raise a score.

The 2026 reality: which rounds actually happened

A score only matters against the rounds IRCC actually holds. The table below covers every round type from 1 January to 19 August 2026.

No round in 2026 could invite a Federal Skilled Worker candidate who had no nomination, no Canadian experience, no French result and no category occupation, at any score. The pool is also most crowded at the scores where UAE profiles tend to sit. As at 16 August 2026 it held 226,859 profiles, of which 73,554 were between 451 and 500 and 60,631 between 401 and 450.

The occupation categories are the one route that requires none of a nomination, Canadian experience or French. Healthcare, trades and transport rounds invited from 467 to 477. Each requires at least 12 months of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in a single listed occupation within the past three years. The STEM category remains on IRCC’s list, but its last round was on 11 April 2024.

From the UAE: what this means for you

A foreign degree needs an Educational Credential Assessment from an organisation IRCC designates: WES, ICAS, IQAS, CES or ICES, with doctors using the Medical Council of Canada and pharmacists the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada. In most cases only the highest credential needs assessing, unless you are claiming the “two or more credentials” band. The report must be less than five years old both when you enter the pool and when you apply, and IRCC refuses applications filed on an expired ECA. Processing times and costs vary by organisation, so the ECA is usually the first document to order.

Language results must come from IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core (TEF Canada or TCF Canada for French) and must be less than two years old when you submit your profile and again when you apply. IRCC does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry, so one weak band means sitting the whole test again. Applicants aiming for CLB 9 often book a second sitting in Dubai or Abu Dhabi before the first result is released.

If your only route is a Federal Skilled Worker profile, the 2026 rounds have not reached you at any score. The routes they have reached are French to NCLC 7 in all four skills, a provincial stream whose criteria you already meet, a listed category occupation with a year of matching experience, or Canadian study or work first. Frequently asked questions

Is 450 a good CRS score in 2026?

It depends on which rounds you qualify for. In 2026, 450 cleared every French-language round and none of the Canadian Experience Class, healthcare, trades, transport or provincial rounds; the only other rounds it would have cleared (senior managers and physicians) require Canadian work experience.

Do I lose points for being married?

Not exactly. Married applicants are scored on lower core maximums (460 rather than 500), but a partner with an ECA and a language test can earn up to 40 spouse points. If your partner is not coming, or is already a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you are scored as single.

Can my employer’s job offer still help?

Only for eligibility. Since 25 March 2025 IRCC removes job-offer points from every profile in the pool. Keep it in your profile, but plan without it.
