Express Entry Category-Based Draws: Who Gets Invited Now

As at August 2026, IRCC has not held a general Express Entry round this year. Every invitation issued between 1 January and 19 August went through a Provincial Nominee Program round, a Canadian Experience Class round or a category-based round. For a candidate in the UAE with no nomination and no Canadian work experience, that leaves the category rounds, and whether a round exists for your occupation or your French now matters as much as your CRS score. This guide sets out the ten categories for 2026, what each has drawn so far, and how we advise clients in Dubai and Abu Dhabi to position.

What category-based selection actually is

Express Entry manages three programmes: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program and the Canadian Experience Class. You must be eligible for one of them before you can enter the pool, and a category does not change that.

IRCC holds three types of round. A general round invites the highest-ranking candidates eligible for any of the three programmes. A program-specific round invites candidates from one programme only, most often the Provincial Nominee Program. A category-based round, a type introduced in 2023, invites the highest-ranking candidates who are eligible for a category the Minister has established to meet a specific economic goal.

IRCC describes category rounds as a supplement to the other round types. It also says it may not need to hold one at all if enough eligible candidates are already being invited through general or program-specific rounds. In practice a category can remain on the list for a full year while very few rounds, or none, are held for it.

The 2026 categories IRCC announced

In February 2026, IRCC announced the year’s categories under three economic priorities: addressing labour shortages, attracting and retaining talent, and supporting Francophone immigration outside Quebec. The list below is as at August 2026.

The agriculture and agri-food category, which received invitations from 2023 to 2025, is not listed on IRCC’s category page as at August 2026. The full occupation list for each category is published on that page, and we check it against a client’s NOC before we say anything about eligibility.

How rounds have actually run in 2026

IRCC’s rounds data for 1 January to 19 August 2026 shows 16 Provincial Nominee Program rounds with 7,399 invitations and cut-offs of 708 to 805, 14 Canadian Experience Class rounds with 49,250 invitations and cut-offs of 507 to 523, 19 category rounds, and no general rounds.

The Canadian Experience Class is built around work experience in Canada, and the Provincial Nominee rounds need a nomination, which carries 600 points. A candidate in the UAE with neither has therefore depended in 2026 on a category round or on securing a nomination.

We regularly review UAE profiles that are complete, with strong language results and a CRS in the 470s, for which no round has been held this year. The profile is not the problem in those cases. The absence of a round for that occupation is.

What the lowest CRS in category draws tells you

IRCC publishes the lowest score invited in each round, and it is the most useful number for deciding where to aim. The table gives the 2026 category record from 1 January to 19 August.

French is the largest category by a wide margin: ten rounds and 50,500 invitations, with cut-offs of 382 to 420 against a Canadian Experience Class line of 507 to 523. The physician cut-offs of 169 and 223 show how a narrow category behaves. Once a candidate is eligible, the score barely matters, but eligibility requires Canadian work experience, so it is not open to most UAE readers. Healthcare, trades and transport cut off between 467 and 477, which is reachable from abroad with strong language results and several years of experience in an eligible occupation.

Frequency matters as much as the cut-off. French drew ten times between January and August, trades once, STEM not at all. A low cut-off is only useful if the round happens while your profile, your language results and your credential assessment are all still valid.

How to position: language, occupation, provincial routes

Language is the lever you control fastest

The CRS awards up to 136 points for your first official language without a spouse. CLB 9 or higher in all four abilities also unlocks up to 50 skill-transferability points in combination with post-secondary education and up to 50 more in combination with foreign work experience.

NCLC 7 in all four abilities makes you eligible for the French-language category. With CLB 5 or higher in English as well, it also adds 50 points to your CRS.

For a candidate with no French, the decision is whether a year or more of study to reach NCLC 7 is worth 50 additional CRS points and access to a category that has drawn ten times in 2026 at 382 to 420. We put those figures in front of clients and let them decide. Some conclude that the study is a better use of time than waiting for a round in their occupation category.

Occupation: match the NOC, not the job title

Category eligibility is assessed against the duties of a single eligible NOC 2021 occupation, not the title on your UAE contract. A “project engineer” may or may not fit civil engineering (21300). What decides it is the duties described in the reference letters from your current and former employers, and obtaining those letters is often the slowest part of a UAE file. Get your credentials assessed early, since an ECA must be less than five years old, and make sure the letters list duties that map to the NOC you are relying on.

Provincial routes are a real alternative

A provincial or territorial nomination adds 600 points, and IRCC invited nominees in all 16 PNP rounds held this year. Each province and territory sets its own requirements and the number of people it can nominate. If no federal category round is likely for your occupation, a nomination may be the more realistic route. From the UAE: what this means for you

Your Educational Credential Assessment must come from a designated organisation such as WES, ICAS, CES, IQAS or ICES. Physicians, pharmacists and architects use their designated professional body instead. Request original transcripts from your university now, as the ECA cannot start without them.

IRCC asks for a police certificate from every country where you have spent six months in a row since age 18. For the UAE, one police clearance from any emirate is enough. The certificate for the country you currently live in must be issued no more than six months before you submit.

IRCC accepts IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General and PTE Core for English, and TEF Canada and TCF Canada for French. Results must be less than two years old when you apply, so book the test with the likely timing of your category’s rounds in mind.

Proof of funds is CAD 15,263 for one person, CAD 19,001 for two and CAD 28,362 for a family of four, shown by official letters from your bank on its letterhead. Once invited, you have 60 days to submit a complete application, including a medical with a panel physician and biometrics if you are aged 14 to 79. We assemble the file before the profile is created so that the 60-day window is spent checking documents rather than requesting them.

Frequently asked questions

If my CRS is below 500, is Express Entry closed to me in 2026?

No. Scores below 500 were invited throughout 2026 in French, healthcare, trades, transport and senior-manager rounds. What has closed, for now, is the general round.

Will the 2026 categories still apply in 2027?

Not necessarily. IRCC is consulting on 2027 priorities from 4 August to 1 September 2026 and is considering expanding its approach to highly skilled talent while narrowing the number or eligibility of labour-shortage categories. Build a profile that is strong on its own.

Do I need French to be invited?

No, but French has been the largest category by far in 2026: 50,500 invitations at cut-offs of 382 to 420. If you can reach NCLC 7 within a year, it is the change we most often recommend.
