New Zealand has opened a new temporary work route for skilled Indian professionals. Under the India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which came into force on 20 October 2026, up to 5,000 work visas can be held by Indian nationals at any one time, with stays of up to three years.
For the many Indian professionals based in the UAE who are weighing their next move, this is one of the more interesting openings of the year — a direct, country-specific pathway tied to a trade agreement rather than a general points system.
What the new route offers
The 5,000 places are split across two categories:
- India Skilled Work Visa — the larger share (around 4,400 places at any one time), aimed at sectors such as information technology, engineering, healthcare, education and construction.
- India Iconic Work Visa — a smaller allocation (around 600 places), covering occupations such as chefs and culinary professionals, yoga instructors, music teachers and Ayush practitioners.
Successful applicants can stay for up to three years. Shorter categories also exist under the agreement — for example, contractual service providers and independent professionals for up to 12 months, and business visitors for up to 90 days in a 12-month period.
A few important things to understand
- It is a quota, not a guarantee. The 5,000 figure is the number of visas that can be held at any one time, not an automatic approval. Each application is assessed against the requirements of its category.
- It is a temporary work pathway. On its own it is not a permanent residence programme and not an automatic route to New Zealand citizenship.
- Eligibility depends on your occupation and category, your qualifications, and a valid job offer or service contract — not simply on your job title.
Separately, the agreement also improves the student route: Indian graduates who complete a PhD in New Zealand are set to become eligible for post-study work visas of up to four years (up from three), from 16 November 2026.
