Family Sponsorship

This is an immigration program through which an immigrant can bring his parents, spouse, children, grandparents, or relatives in some cases. Not only can they come to Canada, but they will also get a Permanent Residentship (PR). The two important documents that you will need to initiate the process are sponsorship agreement and sponsorship undertaking. 

Sponsorship agreement:- This agreement states that the sponsor will full fill the basic needs of the family members, and have to take their full responsibility. 

Sponsorship undertaking:- This is a declaration in which you state that you will take care of your family financially. You will repay any kind of social assistance given to your family after they get their PR. 

Step by Step Guide to apply for Family Sponsorship. 

Step 1:- Check if you qualify as a sponsor

To qualify as a sponsor, the IRCC has laid out certain rules:- 

  • The sponsor must be at least 18 years and above.
  • The sponsor must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
  • The sponsor must prove his financial stability. 
  • Must provide basic needs like food, shelter, and clothes to your family. 
  • If a relative relies on social assistance, the sponsor must pay it back.

Step 2:- Confirm people eligible for sponsorship

You can sponsor the following people:- 

  • Spouse 
  • Common-law partner 
  • Conjugal partner 
  • Dependent Children
  • Blood-related or adopted parents and grandparents.
  • Relatives like a brother, sister, uncle, aunt, but under specific circumstances. 

Step 3:- Apply for Sponsorship

For this you have to submit the sponsorship and PR application together. When your application for sponsorship is approved, the PR process will start immediately. Carefully go through the guide and fill in the application. 

Step 4:- Pay Fees

Step 5:- Submit Application

Step 6:- Confirmation of PR (COPR)

Once your application for sponsorship is approved, the IRCC will start the PR process. On PR approval you will receive 2 documents from the IRCC:-

  • Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR)
  • If necessary, passport stamped with PR visa

Upon receiving these documents, your family can travel to Canada anytime they want.
