L Permit (Short-Term Residence Permit)
For stays of up to 12 months. Employer must demonstrate that no suitable EU/EFTA or Swiss candidate was available (market priority test). Used for temporary contracts and project-based work.
B Permit (Annual Residence Permit)
For stays of 1 year or more with a permanent employment contract. Subject to annual national quotas for non-EU/EFTA nationals. Market priority test required. Renewable annually, eventually leading to C Permit eligibility.
C Permit (Settlement Permit)
After 5-10 years of continuous B Permit residence (5 years for nationals of countries with bilateral agreements, 10 years otherwise). Permanent residence with near-citizen status. Required for Swiss citizenship (after 10 years total residence).
International Organisation Employment
Staff of UN agencies, WHO, WTO, ICRC and other international organisations based in Geneva receive special permits outside the standard quota system.
