Each time: a Provincial Nominee Program round, a Canadian Experience Class round, nothing for his category. As at August 2026, IRCC has not held a single general round this year. In our Dubai office the question has changed from &#8220;what is my CRS score?&#8221; to &#8220;is there a draw for someone like me?&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"cosmos-glance\">\n<h3>At a glance<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Category-based rounds invite the highest-ranking candidates eligible for a category the Minister sets to meet an identified economic goal. You still need to qualify for one of the three programs.<\/li>\n<li>IRCC lists ten categories for 2026: French-language proficiency; healthcare and social services; STEM; trades; education; transport; physicians, senior managers and researchers with Canadian work experience; and skilled military recruits.<\/li>\n<li>Occupation categories need at least one year of cumulative work experience in a single eligible occupation in the previous three years. The French category needs NCLC 7 in all four abilities.<\/li>\n<li>Between 1 January and 19 August 2026, French rounds cut off at 382 to 420 CRS, healthcare 467 and 475, trades 477, transport 470; Canadian Experience Class rounds ran 507 to 523 and PNP 708 to 805.<\/li>\n<li>No STEM, education or general round has run so far in 2026. Being on a list is not the same as being drawn.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>What category-based selection actually is<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cosmosimmigration.com\/canada\">Express Entry<\/a> manages three programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program and the Canadian Experience Class. To be in the pool at all, you must be eligible for one of them.<\/p>\n<p>IRCC holds three types of rounds. General rounds invite the highest-ranking candidates eligible for any program. Program-specific rounds invite candidates from one program, such as the Provincial Nominee Program. Category-based rounds, introduced in 2023, invite the highest-ranking candidates eligible for a category the Minister has established to meet a specific economic goal.<\/p>\n<p>Category rounds supplement other round types, and IRCC says it may not need one at all if enough eligible candidates are already invited elsewhere. A category can be active on paper while very few rounds are held for it.<\/p>\n<h2>The 2026 categories IRCC announced<\/h2>\n<p>In February 2026, IRCC announced the year&#8217;s categories under three economic priorities: labour shortages, attracting and retaining talent, and Francophone immigration outside Quebec. Full occupation lists are on that page.<\/p>\n<h2>How rounds have actually run in 2026<\/h2>\n<p>Between 1 January and 19 August 2026, IRCC&#8217;s rounds data shows 16 Provincial Nominee Program rounds (7,399 invitations, cut-offs 708 to 805), 14 Canadian Experience Class rounds (49,250 invitations, cut-offs 507 to 523), 19 category rounds and no general rounds.<\/p>\n<p>For UAE applicants this matters. The Canadian Experience Class, as its name says, is built around experience in Canada; Provincial Nominee rounds need a nomination, worth 600 points. With neither, your route in 2026 has run through a category round or a nomination.<\/p>\n<p>That is why our engineer keeps refreshing his phone: a complete profile, strong language results, and no round he can enter. We see this every week: well-built profiles in the 470s, waiting for a category that fits.<\/p>\n<h2>What the lowest CRS in category draws tells you<\/h2>\n<p>The lowest score invited in each round is public and is the most useful number for positioning. French is the largest category by a distance: ten rounds, 50,500 invitations, cut-offs of 382 to 420 against a Canadian Experience Class line of 507 to 523. The physician cut-offs of 169 and 223 show what a narrow category does: once eligible, the score barely matters, but it requires Canadian work experience. Healthcare, trades and transport sit between 467 and 477, reachable from abroad with strong language results and several years of experience.<\/p>\n<p>The honest caveat is timing: French drew ten times between January and August, trades once, STEM not at all. A cut-off only helps if the round happens while your profile and test results are still valid.<\/p>\n<h2>How to position: language, occupation, provincial routes<\/h2>\n<h3>Language is the lever you control fastest<\/h3>\n<p>The CRS awards up to 136 points for your first official language without a spouse. CLB 9 or higher in all four abilities also unlocks up to 50 skill-transferability points with post-secondary education and up to 50 more with foreign work experience.<\/p>\n<p>NCLC 7 in all four abilities makes you eligible for the French-language category, and with CLB 5 or higher in English it also adds 50 points to your CRS.<\/p>\n<p>A family in Abu Dhabi sat with us in July with this question: two children, a lease renewal in Khalifa City, and a spreadsheet weighing a year of evening French classes against 50 extra points and a category that has drawn ten times this year at 382 to 420. They did not want a promise, only the numbers. They enrolled the following week.<\/p>\n<h3>Occupation: match the NOC, not the job title<\/h3>\n<p>Category eligibility is assessed against the duties of a single eligible NOC 2021 occupation. A &#8220;project engineer&#8221; in Jebel Ali may or may not fit civil engineering (21300); it depends on what the reference letters from former employers describe, and chasing those letters is often the slowest part of a UAE file. Get your <a href=\"https:\/\/cosmosimmigration.com\/verify-credentials\">credentials assessed<\/a> early (an ECA must be less than five years old) and make sure the letters list duties that map to the NOC.<\/p>\n<h3>Provincial routes are a real alternative<\/h3>\n<p>A provincial or territorial nomination adds 600 points, and IRCC invited nominees in all 16 PNP rounds this year. Each province and territory sets its own requirements and the number it can nominate. If no federal category round is coming for you, a nomination may be the more realistic route. Your Educational Credential Assessment comes from a designated organisation such as WES, ICAS, CES, IQAS or ICES; physicians, pharmacists and architects use their designated professional body. Request original transcripts from your university now.<\/p>\n<p>Police certificates. IRCC asks for one from every country where you have spent six months in a row since age 18. For the UAE, one police clearance from any emirate is enough, and the certificate for the country you live in must be issued no more than six months before you submit.<\/p>\n<p>Tests. IRCC accepts IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General and PTE Core for English, and TEF Canada and TCF Canada for French. Results must be less than two years old when you apply.<\/p>\n<p>Money and timing. Proof of funds is CAD 15,263 for one person, CAD 19,001 for two and CAD 28,362 for a family of four, shown by official letters from your bank on its letterhead. Once invited, you have 60 days to submit a complete application, with a panel-physician medical and biometrics if you are aged 14 to 79. We build the file before creating the profile, so the 60-day window is a checklist rather than a scramble.<\/p>\n<h2>Frequently asked questions<\/h2>\n<h3>If my CRS is below 500, is Express Entry closed to me in 2026?<\/h3>\n<p>No. Scores below 500 were invited throughout 2026 in French, healthcare, trades, transport and senior-manager rounds. What has closed, for now, is the general round.<\/p>\n<h3>Will the 2026 categories still apply in 2027?<\/h3>\n<p>Not necessarily. IRCC is consulting on 2027 priorities from 4 August to 1 September 2026 and is considering expanding its approach to highly skilled talent while narrowing the number or eligibility of labour-shortage categories. Build a profile that is strong on its own.<\/p>\n<h3>Do I need French to be invited?<\/h3>\n<p>No, but French has been the largest category by far in 2026: 50,500 invitations at cut-offs of 382 to 420.
