You create an Express Entry profile, and if you&#8217;re eligible for one of the underlying programmes, you&#8217;re placed in the pool and assigned a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. The physicians category is genuinely new for 2026, introduced specifically to help fill gaps left by foreign-trained doctors who are already working in Canada but hadn&#8217;t previously had a dedicated Express Entry route matched to their situation.<\/p>\n<h2>Why &#8220;saving spaces&#8221; isn&#8217;t really how it works<\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s a common assumption that a new category or pathway means Canada is deliberately holding back general-round invitations to protect space for a future group. What the official process actually describes is closer to the opposite: category-based rounds exist to supplement general and programme-specific rounds where those alone wouldn&#8217;t reach enough candidates in a sector Canada has identified as a priority. IRCC does not need to run a category-based round at all if enough highly-ranked candidates in a priority category are already being invited through ordinary rounds.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, the categories are a targeting tool layered onto the existing pool and ranking system, not a separate quota that competes with general applicants for a fixed number of spots.<\/p>\n<h2>Where category-based selection actually came from<\/h2>\n<p>Category-based selection isn&#8217;t a recent add-on \u2014 IRCC ran its first consultations on the idea back in 2022\u20132023, and has repeated that consultation process every year since (2024, 2025 and again for 2026), each time reviewing which sectors and skills need targeting before setting the next year&#8217;s categories.
