You are responsible for everything in the file, even when someone else fills it in for you. Most of the dos and don’ts below follow from those two rules.

This guide covers the process side of applying from the UAE: telling the truth, keeping your profile current, choosing a representative IRCC will deal with, and spotting scams. For the document problems that most often sink a file, such as weak proof of funds or a missing police certificate, read our separate guide to why Canadian PR applications get refused.

At a glance

Do or don’t

What IRCC says (checked 28 October 2026)

Don’t give false or incomplete information

Express Entry: refusal, inadmissibility, and a bar of 5 years from applying to come to Canada

Do update your Express Entry profile

Required when your situation changes, for example a new job offer, new language test, marriage, divorce or a new child

Do check any paid representative

Only members in good standing of the CICC, a Canadian provincial or territorial law society, or the Chambre des notaires du Québec can be paid

Do declare your representative

Use of a Representative form IMM 5476, even if the representative is unpaid

Don’t pay for “faster processing”

IRCC says offers of faster processing or certain entry are false

Do order police certificates early

Needed for every country where you or an adult family member stayed 6 months in a row or longer in the last 10 years

Don’t reverse a card payment

A chargeback on an IRCC fee can lead to a ban of up to 10 years

Do: tell the truth on every form, and in the medical exam

IRCC’s page on the consequences of fraud says that if you, your representative or your interpreter send false documents or information:

your application will be refused

you could be banned from Canada for at least 5 years

you could have a permanent record of fraud with IRCC

your temporary or permanent resident status, or Canadian citizenship, could be taken away

you could be banned from applying for citizenship for 5 years

you could be removed from Canada

The documents IRCC lists as fraud when false or altered include passports and travel documents, visas and entry or exit stamps, language results, proof of employment or job offers, diplomas and degrees, proof of relationship such as marriage or birth certificates, and police certificates or court documents.

The medical exam is covered too. IRCC says you must answer questions about existing and previous medical conditions truthfully, and giving false information to the panel physician is fraud.

The UAE angle. Many applicants here have worked for several employers across the Gulf, sometimes with job titles on visas that differ from the work they did. Don’t adjust a title, a date or a duty to make it fit a points category. Describe the work you actually did and back it with reference letters and pay records. If something in your history is awkward, such as a gap, a past refusal from another country or an old overstay, deal with it openly in the application. Leaving it out is the problem IRCC’s rule is aimed at.

Don’t: leave your Express Entry profile out of date

An Express Entry profile is not a one-time form. IRCC says you must update your profile if your situation changes, and gives these examples:

you start a new career

you gain or lose a job offer

you get a new language test

you get married or divorced

you have or adopt a new child

If your profile was found eligible for the pool, you can update it through your IRCC account after submitting it.

The same discipline applies after an invitation to apply (ITA). IRCC says that if your situation changes, you should recalculate your score before applying. If the new score is lower than the lowest score in the round you were invited in, you should decline the invitation. If you apply anyway, IRCC may refuse the application and not refund the fee. Its examples of changes that can lower a score are losing a valid job offer, losing a provincial nomination, and language test results that have expired or are lower after a retest.

For UAE residents, the common trigger is a job change. Leaving one employer for another in Dubai or Abu Dhabi can change the work experience you claim, and a contract that ends can affect a claimed job offer. Update the profile when it happens, not when you are invited.

Do: check that any paid representative is authorized

IRCC is clear that you don’t need a representative. All forms and guides are free on its website, and using a representative will not draw special attention to your application or mean it will be approved.

If you do pay someone, in money or in any other form of compensation, IRCC treats them as a paid representative and they must be authorized. The authorized paid representatives are:

citizenship or immigration consultants who are members in good standing of the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CICC)

members in good standing of a Canadian provincial or territorial law society

notaries who are members in good standing of the Chambre des notaires du Québec

IRCC says it won’t deal with representatives who charge a fee but are not authorized, and that if you use an unauthorized representative, in Canada or abroad, it may return or refuse your application. Being abroad does not change this. A UAE-based firm that charges for Canadian immigration advice must have authorized people doing that work.

How to check a consultant on the CICC register

The CICC keeps an online Public Register of Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultants (RCICs) and Regulated International Student Immigration Advisors (RISIAs). The CICC says only those with an “Active” status and “Yes” in the “Entitled to Practise” column can provide immigration advice or services. It also says it is an offence to give Canadian immigration advice for a fee without authorization from the College, a Canadian law society or the Chambre des notaires du Québec.

Search the register by the person’s name and compare the result with the name on your contract and on the IMM 5476 form. If the person is not on the CICC register, IRCC’s page on checking whether your representative is authorized links to the provincial and territorial law societies. You can see the registration details of the advisers we work with on our credentials page.

Do: declare your representative on form IMM 5476

If anyone represents you, paid or unpaid, you must give IRCC their name and contact details on the Use of a Representative form (IMM 5476), signed by the representative. IRCC says you must submit it even if your representative is uncompensated, and adds: “If your representative says you don’t have to give us their information, they’re wrong.”

In Express Entry, the IMM 5476 is on the list of documents to upload with the permanent residence application if you have hired a representative. You can change or cancel your representative at any time by sending a new form.

A representative who stays off the form is a warning sign: they cannot be checked, and you remain responsible for whatever they submit in your name.

Don’t: fall for immigration scams

IRCC’s fraud pages describe the scams applicants in the UAE see on social media, by email and by phone. The points to remember:

No one can promise you a job or a visa to Canada. Only immigration officers in Canada and at Canadian embassies, high commissions and consulates decide whether to issue a visa.

Fees are the same everywhere. IRCC’s processing fees are the same around the world, and fees for Canadian government services are paid to the “Receiver General for Canada” unless a visa office website says otherwise.

Biometrics appointments are not for sale. Visa application centres don’t charge you to give your biometrics, and IRCC warns against representatives who claim they can speed up a biometrics appointment for a fee.

IRCC staff will never ask you to deposit money into a personal bank account, send money through a private money transfer service, threaten you, offer special deals, or contact you from a free email service such as Gmail, Hotmail or Yahoo Mail.

IRCC does not send visas by email and will never ask for any payment by telephone.

IRCC will never start a conversation through social media. Direct messages that claim to be from IRCC are not.

Watch for AI-made content. IRCC warns about fake videos of public figures and officials promoting fast or certain immigration, fake websites that offer immigration advice, and fake emails or calls that claim to come from IRCC officials.

IRCC also warns against representatives who advertise free services and later ask for a fee, who promise approval, or who advise you to lie. And on its website guidance it is blunt: don’t pay for offers of certain entry into Canada or faster processing, because those claims are false.

Don’t reverse a card payment to IRCC

A chargeback is a credit card payment made during the visa application process that is later reversed by the applicant or someone acting for them. IRCC treats this as fraud. The application can be cancelled, delayed or denied, and you could be banned from travelling to Canada for up to 10 years.

If you have already been targeted

For online, phone or text message scams, IRCC directs people to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, and to the police if you gave out personal or financial information. If you are outside Canada and a representative committed fraud, IRCC’s reporting page says to report it to IRCC through its web form if you have an application, to the CBSA Border Watch Line, and to the CICC or the relevant law society depending on who the representative is. IRCC states that its goal is to stop the people committing fraud, not to punish the people who were misled.

Do: prepare funds, police certificates and medicals on IRCC’s terms

These three trip up many UAE files, and our refusal reasons guide covers them in depth. The short version:

Proof of funds. Federal Skilled Worker and Federal Skilled Trades candidates must show settlement funds; Canadian Experience Class candidates and those authorized to work in Canada with a valid job offer don’t. IRCC’s current table (dated 7 July 2025 on a page updated in October 2026) starts at CAD 15,263 for one person and CAD 28,362 for a family of four.

Proof means official letters from each bank, on letterhead, showing account numbers, opening dates, current balances and the average balance over the past 6 months. You can’t borrow the money from another person or count equity in property. Check the proof of funds page before you apply, because IRCC updates the figures.

Police certificates. IRCC asks for certificates for you and family members aged 18 or older, for every country where you stayed 6 months in a row or longer in the last 10 years. The certificate for the country where you live now, for most readers the UAE, must be issued no more than 6 months before you submit. Upload colour scans of the originals: certified true copies are not accepted and lead to rejection. IRCC suggests requesting certificates as soon as your profile is in the pool, since some countries take a long time.

Medical exam. An immigration medical exam from an IRCC panel physician is required for permanent residence. If you have never had one before, IRCC says to get it after you are invited to apply.

From the UAE: what this means for you

Write down every job, address and trip of the last 10 years before you create a profile, and make every form match it.

Before paying anyone, check the person on the CICC Public Register or a Canadian law society and confirm they will sign an IMM 5476.

Pay IRCC fees only through IRCC’s own website, and ignore any message offering faster processing or a reserved slot.

Request police certificates for each country you have lived in once your profile is in the pool.

Update your Express Entry profile the week your job, marital status or language results change.

Our Canada skilled migration page explains Express Entry from the UAE, and our Canada page covers the other routes.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the ban for misrepresentation in a Canadian application?

For false information or missing details in an Express Entry application, IRCC says it can bar you for 5 years from applying to come to Canada. Its fraud page says you could be banned from Canada for at least 5 years and could keep a permanent record of fraud with IRCC.

Do I have to use an immigration consultant to apply for Canada?

No. IRCC says you don’t need a representative and all forms are free on its website. If you pay someone, they must be a CICC member in good standing, a member of a Canadian law society, or a Québec notary.

How do I check if a Canadian immigration consultant is real?

Search the CICC Public Register. The consultant should show an “Active” status and “Yes” under “Entitled to Practise”, and the name should match the one on your IMM 5476 form.

Can someone in Dubai speed up my Canadian visa for a fee?

IRCC says offers of faster processing or certain entry are false, and warns against anyone who claims to speed up a biometrics appointment for a fee.

What to do next

If you want a second look at your profile or documents before you submit, start with a free assessment or call 04 357 7796. We are working with CICC- and/or MARA-registered advisers, and you can check their registrations on our credentials page.
