In October 2026 the bar is lower on experience than in 2024 and higher on English: two years of relevant experience or a level 4 qualification (the 2024 rule said three years), English for jobs at ANZSCO skill level 3 to 5, and a three-year cap for level 4 and 5 roles. Since 24 August 2026, two new Skilled Migrant Category pathways reward work experience gained in New Zealand on that visa, which changes how a Dubai applicant should weigh the first job offer. This post updates our AEWV guide with what the official pages say on 17 October 2026.

What the AEWV requires now

An accredited employer and a compliant agreement. The job offer must come from an employer on INZ’s accredited list, and the written agreement must state the employer’s details, your job title, workplace address, duties, required qualifications or experience, any registration requirement, hours and duration. It cannot contain unlawful deductions, a trial period or a bonding clause. Seasonal horticulture work, foreign fishing crew and self-employment are excluded from the AEWV entirely.

Minimum skill: two years or a level 4 qualification. You must show either at least two years of relevant work experience or a qualification at level 4 or above on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework, in the same field as the job (any field with a bachelor’s degree or higher). The two years need not be consecutive or full-time, but must total two years full-time equivalent with hours evidenced. INZ’s April 2024 announcement set this at three years; the live page now says two.

Evidence that is not written by you. This is where UAE applications most often stumble. INZ wants employment certificates on letterhead showing positions, dates and employer contact details, plus pay slips or tax certificates. A reference letter counts only when supported by those documents, and a CV on its own is not evidence.

Qualifications below bachelor level need an IQA. An overseas qualification below a bachelor’s degree needs an International Qualification Assessment from NZQA to confirm it sits at level 4 or above.

When you can skip the skill evidence. If the job is on the Green List and you meet that role’s requirements, if you hold occupational registration that itself required experience or a qualification, if the job pays at least NZD 67.12 an hour (twice the 2024 median wage), or if you gave the evidence on a previous application. Our Green List explainer lists the roles.

Skill level decides English, stay length and family

INZ grades jobs by ANZSCO skill level 1 to 5 and is phasing in its National Occupation List (NOL) for the AEWV. Your job’s level decides three things:

Job skill level

English evidence

Maximum continuous stay

Family support

ANZSCO or NOL 1 and 2

Not required

5 years in most cases

Depends on earnings and level

ANZSCO or NOL 3

Required

5 years in most cases

Depends on earnings and level

ANZSCO or NOL 4 and 5

Required

3 years

Depends on earnings and level

You are exempt from the English test if you proved English on an earlier AEWV application, or if your job is level 3 and your visa expires on or before 1 December 2026. Test results must be under two years old when you apply.

After the maximum stay you must normally spend 12 months outside New Zealand before another AEWV. Partners and children cannot be included on the AEWV itself, but you may be able to support their visitor, work or student visas depending on your pay and job level. A chest X-ray is needed for stays over six months if you are from, or spent three months in, a country without low tuberculosis incidence, and police certificates must be under six months old if you are 17 or older. The NOL is only for the AEWV; for the Skilled Migrant Category, INZ says to use ANZSCO.

What changed on 24 August 2026, and why it matters from Dubai

INZ’s announcement of 5 March 2026 brought a second set of Skilled Migrant Category changes into force on 24 August 2026. The two that matter for an AEWV holder:

Skilled Work Experience pathway. A skilled role at ANZSCO level 1 to 3, at least five years of directly relevant experience, including two years in New Zealand paid at 1.1 times the SMC median wage. Occupations on the new amber list need two New Zealand years at 1.2 times the median. Red-list occupations are not eligible for the new pathways and must claim six points the existing way (1.5 times the median, or a bachelor’s degree or higher, or recognised registration with the required New Zealand experience).

Trades and Technician pathway. A listed trade or technician occupation at ANZSCO level 1 to 3, a relevant level 4 or higher qualification, and at least four years of post-qualification experience including 1.5 years in New Zealand at or above the SMC median wage.

INZ also confirmed a future ability to extend an AEWV to complete the skilled work experience requirement, simplified the median-wage settings, and added accountants to the recognised occupational registrations.

The practical reading for a UAE applicant: the first New Zealand job is now the start of a residence clock, and the clock only runs if the role is ANZSCO level 1 to 3, paid at or above the relevant median multiple, and not on the red list. A level 4 or 5 role gives you three years in the country and no new residence pathway. Check the list before you accept the offer. Our SMC points guide sets out the six-point system that the new pathways sit alongside.

A UAE-specific checklist for October 2026

Confirm the employer is on the accredited employer list and not on the stand-down list.

Get the employment agreement in writing with every item INZ lists; have any trial period removed.

Assemble experience evidence the INZ way: letterhead certificates plus WPS slips or bank salary credits for the same period.

Find the job’s ANZSCO or NOL skill level. If it is level 3 to 5, book an English test now.

Check whether the occupation is on the Green List, the Trades and Technician list, or the red or amber list, because that decides whether the visa leads anywhere.

FAQs

How much experience do I need for the AEWV in 2026?
Two years of relevant experience, or a qualification at NZQCF level 4 or higher, per INZ’s current page. The 2024 announcement set three years; the live requirement is two.

Do I need an English test?
Yes if the job is ANZSCO or NOL skill level 3, 4 or 5, unless you proved English on a previous AEWV application or your level 3 visa expires on or before 1 December 2026. Level 1 and 2 jobs do not require it.

Can my family come with me?
Not on the AEWV itself. You may be able to support partner and child visas, depending on your pay and job skill level.

Does the AEWV lead to residence?
It can. Since 24 August 2026 the Skilled Work Experience and Trades and Technician pathways count New Zealand work at level 1 to 3 paid at the required median multiple, with red and amber lists limiting some occupations.

What pay removes the skill-evidence requirement?
At least NZD 67.12 an hour, which INZ defines as twice the 2024 median wage. Green List roles and recognised registration also remove it.

Next step

If you have an offer, send us the job title, pay rate and employer, and we will map the skill level, the English requirement and whether the role sits on a residence pathway.
