The tone is official and the deadline is today. We hear about messages like this from clients and friends across Dubai and Abu Dhabi throughout the year, and the useful thing is that the government agencies behind these fake calls and emails have already published exactly what a genuine contact from them looks like.

At a glance

IRCC says it will never ask for banking or credit card details by email, never email visas, permits or certificates, and never offer time-limited cash deals for status.

Australia’s Department of Home Affairs warns that scam agents posing as registered migration agents often advertise on social media and can put a visa, entry, and future eligibility at risk.

Officials impersonating senior Home Affairs officers have asked applicants for extra payment to “speed up” a visa; the department says it will never do this.

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) warned in May 2026 of a rise in scam phone calls demanding payment or personal details over a supposedly urgent visa problem.

In the UAE, MOHRE lets you check a job offer’s reference number, and GDRFA (Dubai) or the ICP eChannels platform (other emirates) let you verify an entry permit or visa before you rely on it.

The pattern behind most immigration scams

Read enough official fraud warnings and a shape starts to repeat: urgency, a request for money or personal details through an unusual channel, and a promise that does not match how the real process works. Canada’s Competition Bureau flags job scams where the offer promises a lot of income for little effort, or asks the target to use their own bank account to receive and pass on payments for a company in exchange for a commission. That does not resemble a genuine employer relationship, and it is worth remembering before you consider any work offer tied to a visa application, wherever it comes from.

Canada: what IRCC actually warns about

IRCC has published a specific list of things it says it will never do. It will never email you to confirm basic personal information already on your application form. It will never ask for banking or credit card information by email to collect a payment. And it will never send your visa, permit, certificate, or other immigration documents by email, or offer a time-limited promotion or cash deal to get you status.

Genuine IRCC email comes from addresses ending in @cic.gc.ca, @canada.ca, or @international.gc.ca, usually “do not reply” accounts. If a message about a Canada application asks you to reply with banking details or pay by an unfamiliar method, stop and verify independently rather than through the contact details in the message itself. IRCC directs people who receive suspicious emails to report them to local police and to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

Australia: fake agents and officer impersonation

Australia’s Department of Home Affairs describes scam agents who pretend to be registered migration agents and exploit visa applicants for financial gain, often advertising on social media, and in some cases encouraging people to work in Australia illegally. Engaging with a scam agent can put your visa, entry, and future eligibility at risk, and the department states it can also lead to being refused entry, ineligible for future visas, banned from returning, or left stranded or sent home.

A separate warning covers a different pattern: scammers impersonating senior Home Affairs officers, offering help with a visa application, and in some cases asking for extra payment to speed up processing. The department states plainly that officials will never ask for extra payments to process a visa faster. If you receive a call like this about an Australia application, the advice is to hang up or delete the message, contact the department directly, and check your own ImmiAccount rather than trust the caller’s claimed identity.

New Zealand and the UK: phone calls and payment demands

Immigration New Zealand issued a public warning in May 2026 about a rise in scam phone calls from people pretending to be INZ staff, using New Zealand mobile numbers and claiming there is an urgent problem with the recipient’s visa. Some calls demand payment or personal information such as passport or bank details, or threaten legal action for non-compliance. INZ states it will never contact anyone by phone asking for payment, and advises hanging up, sharing no information, and reporting the call to CERT NZ or Netsafe. For reassurance about an actual New Zealand visa, INZ’s advice is to contact its Service Centre directly, not the number that called you.

The UK government’s guidance is specific about money: you will never be asked to pay for a visa using cash or a money transfer. GOV.UK asks anyone who receives a suspicious visa or immigration email to report it, including a copy of the email, the sender’s address, and the date and time received, through its Report Fraud service. The same caution applies to any request tied to a UK application that asks for an unusual payment method.

What official bodies say they will never do

It helps to see these warnings side by side. Each row below comes directly from that country’s own government guidance.

Country / regulator

What they state they will never do

Canada — IRCC

Never asks for banking or credit card details by email; never emails visas, permits or certificates; never offers time-limited cash deals for status.

Australia — Department of Home Affairs

Never asks for extra payment to process a visa faster.

New Zealand — Immigration New Zealand

Never contacts anyone by phone asking for payment.

United Kingdom — GOV.UK

Never asks you to pay for a visa using cash or a money transfer.

From the UAE: what this means for you

Most of these scam patterns arrive while you are waiting for news, whether that is between attestation appointments, after a bank statement finally clears for a proof-of-funds requirement, or while you are refreshing an online portal for an update. That waiting is exactly when a confident phone call or a well-formatted email can feel like relief rather than a red flag.

The UAE’s own government portal, u.ae, has practical checks for the parts of this that touch UAE employment and residency directly. If you are offered a job in the UAE, you must be given an offer letter issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE), signed by the authorised manager, and you can verify that offer’s validity using its reference number through MOHRE’s own enquiry service before you travel or resign from anything at home. The same guidance notes that a visit or tourist visa does not give you the right to work in the UAE, and that recruitment expenses are legally the employer’s responsibility, not the worker’s, under UAE labour law.

Once a visa or entry permit is issued, check it directly with the issuing authority rather than trusting a document you were sent. Permits and visas issued in Dubai can be verified through GDRFA. Permits and visas issued from Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, or Fujairah can be verified through the ICP eChannels platform.

If you believe you have been targeted by a scam while in the UAE, official guidance points to your local police first, Dubai Police or Abu Dhabi Police depending on where you are. Dubai Police also runs an eCrime platform for reporting cyber-enabled financial crimes and scams. The Central Bank of the UAE is the channel for fraudulent emails or messages posing as the Central Bank itself, and the Economic Security Center of Dubai (ESCD) handles matters affecting the emirate’s economic security. Before paying any fee connected to a visa or immigration process, it is worth pausing at one of these checks rather than at the pressure of someone else’s deadline. Our own verify-credentials page and tools page are useful starting points too.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if an email claiming to be from an immigration authority like IRCC is genuine?

IRCC says it will never ask you to confirm basic personal information by email, never ask for banking or credit card details by email, and never send visas, permits, or certificates by email. Genuine IRCC email addresses end in @cic.gc.ca, @canada.ca, or @international.gc.ca and are usually “do not reply” accounts. Report a suspicious email to local police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre rather than replying to it.

Someone is asking for extra payment to speed up my visa. Is that normal?

No official source in this guide supports that. Australia’s Department of Home Affairs states officials will never ask for extra payment to process a visa faster, and GOV.UK says you will never be asked to pay for a visa using cash or a money transfer. In the UAE, recruitment expenses connected to a job offer are legally the employer’s responsibility, not the worker’s, under UAE labour law.

How can I check a UAE job offer or visa before I rely on it?

A genuine UAE job offer must come as a letter issued by MOHRE and signed by the authorised manager, verifiable by its reference number through MOHRE’s enquiry service. For a visa or entry permit, check validity through GDRFA if issued in Dubai, or the ICP eChannels platform if issued from Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, or Fujairah.

What to do next

If a call, email, or message about your visa, work permit, or immigration application has left you unsure what is real, we offer a free eligibility assessment to help you look at your situation and your options.
