What follows is less photogenic: a number you need before anyone can pay you, a health card that may take months, a bank that wants original documents, not scans. This guide walks a UAE family through the first 90 days, using only what the official Canadian pages say as at September 2026.

At a glance

Your Social Insurance Number (SIN) is the 9-digit number you need to work or access government programs and benefits. Service Canada no longer issues a plastic card.

A complete SIN application takes about 5 business days online, against about 20 business days by mail.

Health cover is provincial. Ontario has no waiting period. British Columbia coverage may start three months after arrival. Alberta requires you to apply within 3 months of establishing residency.

Newcomers are eligible for a no-cost bank account in their first year in Canada, with at least 18 debit transactions a month included and no minimum balance.

From 1 April 2026, economic-class permanent residents can use federally funded settlement services for up to 6 years after obtaining PR, falling to 5 years from 1 April 2027.

Week one: get your Social Insurance Number

Employment and Social Development Canada describes the SIN as a 9-digit number you need to work in Canada or access government programs and benefits. Put it first on the list. Without it, an employer cannot set you up properly and the federal programs your family may be entitled to stay out of reach.

Service Canada no longer issues plastic SIN cards. You view or print the number through My Service Canada Account, or you receive a confirmation letter by mail. Treat that letter the way you treated your Emirates ID: keep it safe, and do not hand the number out casually.

What to bring

You need one primary identity document that proves your legal status in Canada, such as your PR card, a work or study permit or your COPR, plus one secondary identity document that confirms your identity. The exact list depends on your immigration status, so use the Service Canada interactive tool to generate it before you apply.

How long it takes

Online, with all required documents included, processing takes about 5 business days; by mail, about 20. Service Canada asks you not to contact the SIN Program unless more than 10 business days have passed for an online application, or 25 for a mailed one, with no SIN received. It cannot give you a SIN by phone.

Health cover: the province you land in decides the gap

Health care in Canada is run by each province, and the rules for newcomers differ sharply between the three provinces our readers ask about most.

Ontario: no waiting period

Ontario states that there is no longer a waiting period for OHIP coverage. If you are eligible, you have immediate health insurance coverage, rather than waiting three months as newcomers once did. You must still apply in person at a ServiceOntario centre and bring the required identification documents with you. There is no online-only route for a first-time health card.

British Columbia: plan for a three-month bridge

Apply for the Medical Services Plan (MSP) as soon as you arrive; coverage may start three months later, so get private cover for the wait. The formal Coverage Wait Period is the balance of the month you establish residence, plus two more months, so arriving in mid-August means coverage starts 1 November.

Alberta: a three-month deadline to apply

Moving to Alberta from outside Canada, you might be eligible for coverage from the date you established residency, but you must apply for the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) within 3 months and provide all required documents. Apply late and your coverage date is set only when the application is processed.

Whatever the province, apply for provincial cover in your first week. If British Columbia is the destination, arrange private insurance for the wait.

Opening your first Canadian bank account

Canada’s bank rules are simpler than the Dubai routine of salary certificates and tenancy contracts. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) says you must confirm your identity with original ID, not photocopies, using one of two federally defined methods. Neither a SIN nor a Canadian credit history is a condition of opening an account, and you may open one with no credit history, no job and no money to deposit.

A newcomer to Canada is eligible for a no-cost account for the first year. Low-cost and no-cost accounts must include at least 18 debit transactions per month, with no minimum balance. Ask for it by name at the branch, and treat any promotional newcomer package as commercial terms, not government rules.

Finding a place to rent

IRCC’s newcomer housing guidance lists the practical channels: social media and classifieds sites such as Facebook Marketplace or Kijiji, rental agencies, and newcomer services providers. That last route is the one Gulf families overlook most.

Budget for the deposit structure. IRCC warns that in some provinces a landlord may ask for first and last months’ rent plus a security deposit at signing, which is why the bank account comes before the apartment. IRCC also recommends having a friend, relative or newcomer services provider review the lease first.

Settlement services: the clock now runs

IRCC’s Settling in Canada portal is the starting point for newcomer services nationwide, including housing, health care and language help. One rule changed this year: from 1 April 2026, economic-class permanent residents, the category most UAE-based skilled applicants land under, can only access federally funded settlement services for a limited time, up to 6 years after obtaining PR, falling to 5 years from 1 April 2027. Previously there was no time limit before citizenship. The cap covers current and new economic-class PRs and their accompanying family.

Six years is generous, but it is now finite. Use the services early, while you are still choosing a neighbourhood and learning how the system works.

Your 90-day checklist

Task

Where

What the official source says about timing

Apply for your SIN

Online through Service Canada, or by mail

About 5 business days online, about 20 by mail, if complete. Immediate coverage if eligible.

Enrol in MSP (British Columbia)

Province of BC, MSP enrolment

Apply as soon as you arrive. Coverage may run from the date residency was established.

Open a bank account

A Canadian bank, with original ID

Newcomers are eligible for a no-cost account in their first year in Canada.

Find a rental

Online listings, rental agencies, newcomer services providers

In some provinces, first and last months’ rent plus a security deposit at lease signing.

Use settlement services

IRCC Settling in Canada portal

Economic-class PRs: up to 6 years after PR from 1 April 2026, up to 5 years from 1 April 2027.

From the UAE: what this means for you

We see the same pattern every week in our Dubai and Abu Dhabi offices: families who spent two years assembling a careful PR file treat the landing as the finish line. The first 90 days deserve the same discipline.

Originals travel with you. Canada’s bank ID rules and the SIN application both turn on original documents. Your PR cards, COPRs, passports and the secondary identity document for every family member belong in your cabin bag, not the shipping container that follows you a few weeks later.

Choose the province with the health gap in mind. Weighing Ontario against British Columbia or Alberta, the gap between immediate OHIP coverage and a wait running past two full months matters for a family with young children. Price private cover for the wait if British Columbia is the plan.

Do the SIN online, before the job search starts. The online route is processed in about 5 business days. Mail takes about 20. Apply in your first week, so that the offer letter you are hoping for does not stall on a missing number.

Use settlement services while the window is generous. The eligibility cap for economic-class PRs began on 1 April 2026. Register with a newcomer services provider in month one, not year five.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a SIN before I can open a bank account?

The FCAC’s identification requirements list ID documents only. Neither a SIN nor a Canadian credit history appears as a condition of opening an account, and the official page confirms you may be able to open one with no credit history, no job and no money to deposit.

Is there really no health waiting period in Ontario?

Yes. Ontario’s official page states there is no longer a waiting period for OHIP coverage and that eligible applicants have immediate health insurance coverage. You must apply in person at a ServiceOntario centre with the required identification.

How long can we use newcomer settlement services after landing?

As of 1 April 2026, economic-class permanent residents can access federally funded settlement services for up to 6 years after obtaining permanent residence. From 1 April 2027 that becomes up to 5 years. The cap covers accompanying spouses and dependants as well as the principal applicant.

What to do next

If Canada is still a plan rather than a boarding pass, start with a free eligibility assessment.
