They know it&#8217;s their Comprehensive Ranking System score. What most don&#8217;t know is where each point actually comes from, or which parts of the profile they can still change before the next round of invitations. That gap \u2014 between having a score and understanding it \u2014 is usually what separates someone who waits from someone who moves.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cosmos-glance\">\n<h3>At a glance<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The CRS has four sections \u2014 core human capital, spouse factors, skill transferability, and additional points \u2014 with a maximum possible score of 1,200.<\/li>\n<li>Section A (core factors: age, education, language, Canadian work experience) is worth up to 500 points on its own.<\/li>\n<li>Job offer points were removed from the CRS in March 2025 \u2014 a job offer no longer adds points by itself.<\/li>\n<li>A provincial or territorial nomination is worth 600 points, more than any other single factor in the grid.<\/li>\n<li>IRCC ran a public consultation on possible CRS reforms in spring 2026; as of now, nothing in the grid has actually changed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>What the CRS actually adds up<\/h2>\n<p>The Comprehensive Ranking System scores every profile in the <a href=\"https:\/\/cosmosimmigration.com\/canada\" rel=\"noopener\">Express Entry pool<\/a> out of a possible 1,200 points, across four sections. Section A \u2014 age, education, language ability, Canadian work experience \u2014 is worth up to 500 points, whether or not you have a spouse or common-law partner (the split changes slightly if you do). Section B applies only if your spouse or partner is accompanying you, adding up to 40 points. Section C, skill transferability, is capped at 100 points and rewards combinations of factors. IRCC&#8217;s CRS criteria page has the full year-by-year table.<\/p>\n<h3>Education<\/h3>\n<p>Education points: secondary school or less scores zero, a one-year post-secondary credential scores 90, a two-year program scores 98, a bachelor&#8217;s degree (three years or longer) scores 120, two or more credentials (at least one three years or longer) scores 128, a master&#8217;s degree or single-discipline professional degree (medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, optometry, law, chiropractic medicine or pharmacy) scores 135, and a PhD scores 150. Foreign credentials only count once assessed as equivalent through an Educational Credential Assessment.<\/p>\n<h3>Language<\/h3>\n<p>Points are awarded per ability \u2014 reading, writing, speaking, listening \u2014 then summed. On your first official language (without a spouse), CLB 4\/5 scores 6 points per ability, CLB 7 scores 17, CLB 9 scores 31, and CLB 10+ scores 34, up to 136 combined. A second official language adds real value too: CLB 7-8 scores 3 points per ability, CLB 9+ scores 6, up to 24 points (22 with a spouse) \u2014 points many candidates never test for.<\/p>\n<h3>Canadian work experience<\/h3>\n<p>Employment with a Canadian employer while physically present in Canada scores 40 points for one year, rising to 80 at five years or more (without a spouse; 35 to 70 with a spouse). Under a year scores zero.<\/p>\n<h2>Spouse factors and skill transferability<\/h2>\n<p>If your spouse or common-law partner is accompanying you, their profile can add up to 40 points: up to 10 for education, up to 20 for language proficiency, up to 10 for Canadian work experience.<\/p>\n<p>Skill transferability (Section C) is worth up to 100 points combined, across three sub-categories capped at 50 points each: education paired with language or Canadian work experience; foreign work experience paired with language or Canadian work experience; and a trade certificate of qualification paired with language.<\/p>\n<h2>Additional points: where extra points move you fastest<\/h2>\n<p>Section D can add up to 600 points beyond everything else. A brother or sister aged 18 or older who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident living in Canada adds 15 points. French language ability can add up to 50 points \u2014 25 for NCLC 7+ across all four French abilities, rising to 50 if you also score CLB 5+ across all four English abilities. A one-to-two-year Canadian credential adds 15 points, a three-year-or-longer one adds 30. A provincial or territorial nomination adds the full 600 points \u2014 enough on its own to put a candidate above almost every other person in the pool, which in practice makes an invitation in the next round highly likely.<\/p>\n<h2>Job offer points are gone \u2014 category-based rounds matter more now<\/h2>\n<p>As of 25 March 2025, IRCC removed job offer points from the CRS entirely, for every current and future candidate. A job offer may still be required for eligibility in certain programs, but it no longer adds points to your score by itself \u2014 worth knowing if you&#8217;ve read older guides that say otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>Category-based selection, introduced in 2023, matters more now. Within a category-based round, IRCC invites the highest-ranking CRS scores among candidates eligible for that category \u2014 the category changes who can be invited and at what cut-off, not how the score is calculated. On 18 February 2026, IRCC announced its 2026 categories: Canadian Experience Class rounds, plus category-based rounds for long-term labour shortages, attracting and retaining highly skilled candidates, and Francophone immigration outside Quebec. In 2024, IRCC issued 98,903 invitations across 52 rounds, 19 of which were category-based, accounting for 43% of the year&#8217;s total. Eligible CRS scores in the pool that year were concentrated in the 301-500 range, and 91% of invitees held a post-secondary credential of at least three years.<\/p>\n<h2>Is the CRS about to change?<\/h2>\n<p>IRCC held a public consultation on possible Express Entry reforms from 23 April to 24 May 2026, receiving over 17,000 submissions. Ideas under review include merging the three current programs (Federal Skilled Worker, Federal Skilled Trades, Canadian Experience Class) into one, reweighting CRS factors based on evidence of what predicts economic success in Canada, and a new &#8220;high-wage occupation&#8221; factor that would bring back job offer points, but only for high-wage roles. None of this has been implemented \u2014 IRCC describes the input as &#8220;now being analyzed.&#8221; Treat any proposed factor weights you see online as exactly that: a proposal, not the current grid.<\/p>\n<h2>From the UAE: what this means for you<\/h2>\n<p>For most candidates applying from Dubai or Abu Dhabi, two administrative steps sit underneath every CRS point in the education section: the language test and the Educational Credential Assessment (ECA). An ECA is mandatory for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, and needed for the Canadian Experience Class or Federal Skilled Trades Program if you want to claim points for a credential earned outside Canada. It must be less than five years old when you create your profile and when you submit your application. In most cases only your highest credential needs assessing, though claiming points for two or more credentials means each one needs its own ECA. A spouse&#8217;s foreign credential can be assessed too, unlocking the spousal education points above.<\/p>\n<p>For language testing, IRCC accepts CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training (not the IELTS One Skill Retake), and PTE Core for English, and TEF Canada or TCF Canada for French. All operate in the UAE; check current test-centre schedules directly with the provider. Between the ECA and the language test, expect several weeks before your CRS score reflects your true profile \u2014 which is why we walk clients through this timeline using our <a href=\"https:\/\/cosmosimmigration.com\/canada-pr-points-calculator\" rel=\"noopener\">CRS points calculator<\/a> before anything is booked.<\/p>\n<h2>Frequently asked questions<\/h2>\n<h3>Does a job offer still add points to my CRS score?<\/h3>\n<p>No. IRCC removed job offer points from the CRS for everyone as of 25 March 2025. A job offer may still matter for eligibility in specific programs, but it no longer changes your score on its own.<\/p>\n<h3>I&#8217;m fluent in English \u2014 is it worth testing in French too?<\/h3>\n<p>For many UAE-based candidates, yes. A second official language can add up to 24 points on its own (22 with a spouse), and if your French reaches NCLC 7+ across all four abilities, the French-language additional points category can add up to 50 points on top of that.<\/p>\n<h3>Is the CRS grid changing in 2026?<\/h3>\n<p>Not yet. IRCC consulted the public on possible reforms between April and May 2026 and is still analyzing that input.
