We had a call last month from someone in Business Bay who realised, mid-way through renewing his UAE residence visa, that his Australian PR travel facility had quietly expired eighteen months earlier. Nothing had “happened” \u2014 no letter, no warning \u2014 until he tried to book a flight home for his sister’s wedding and read the fine print on his old visa grant notice. This is one of the most common blind spots we see among Australian PR holders building a career in Dubai or Abu Dhabi: permanent residency doesn’t come with an unlimited right to leave and re-enter forever. That right runs on a timer, and the Resident Return visa (RRV) is what resets it.<\/p>\n
Every Australian permanent visa carries a “travel facility” \u2014 a window during which you can leave and re-enter Australia while keeping your PR status. Once that window closes, you still hold permanent residency in name, but you lose the right to travel in and out of Australia as a permanent resident. If you leave after your travel facility has expired, or it expires while you’re overseas, you won’t be able to return as a PR holder until a new one is granted. That’s what the RRV does: it renews your travel facility so your permanent residency keeps working while you build a life in the UAE.<\/p>\n
The RRV is assessed and issued as one of two subclasses \u2014 155 or 157 \u2014 under a single application. You don’t choose which one; Home Affairs decides based on how you meet the eligibility criteria below.<\/p>\n
You’re eligible if you are a current Australian permanent resident, a former permanent resident whose last permanent visa was not cancelled, or a former Australian citizen who lost or renounced their citizenship. Current Australian citizens are not eligible to apply for an RRV.<\/p>\n
This is the part that often gets flattened into a false “5 years or 3 months” choice. It isn’t a binary decision \u2014 it’s a structured fallback that Home Affairs works through in order, and the middle tier is where most UAE-based professionals actually land.<\/p>\n

Miss it, and Home Affairs moves you into the substantial ties assessment, which covers four separate scenarios rather than one shortcut \u2014 each is capped at 12 months, not 5 years, and most carry a 5-year continuous-absence limit that Home Affairs can waive only for compelling reasons. Only if none of those routes apply, and you can show compelling and compassionate circumstances with zero absences from Australia in the prior 5 years, does the narrow 3-month subclass 157 come into play \u2014 a last-resort category, not a standard option for someone who’s simply been working abroad.<\/p>\n Some PR holders who’ve already cleared the residence test \u2014 with no change to their name or date of birth since their last visa grant, and who meet the character requirement \u2014 can be granted the RRV automatically, without submitting supporting documents at all.<\/p>\n Costs, timelines and the fine print<\/h2>\nThe RRV costs AUD 1,475.00 per applicant to apply online \u2014 the standard route, as at September 2026. Paper applications are only accepted with departmental authorisation and carry an extra non-internet charge. If Home Affairs requests police certificates, those are paid for separately.<\/p>\n Processing depends on which tier you fall into. Applications that meet the residence requirement are generally processed within 5 working days of lodgement. Applications assessed under the substantial-ties or compelling-reasons routes take longer \u2014 Home Affairs cites examples of 12 weeks from lodgement or more. If your travel facility is close to expiring, that gap matters: lodge early rather than relying on the residence test at the last minute.<\/p>\n A few rules to know before you lodge: you cannot carry over any remaining travel facility from your previous visa into a new RRV, and no refund is given for facility you lose in the process. You can’t request an extension to a granted travel facility, and once you meet the requirements, the grant cannot be postponed. Home Affairs also generally will not refund the application charge if the application is refused, if you lose remaining travel facility once the RRV is granted, if you don’t end up using the facility, or if lodging before you’d met the residence requirement results in only a 1-year facility instead of 5.<\/p>\n Applying, family members, and keeping your travel facility current<\/h2>\nYou can apply from inside or outside Australia \u2014 including from the UAE \u2014 but not while physically in immigration clearance. Every application is lodged online through ImmiAccount, even without an existing electronic visa record; paper applications need prior departmental authorisation.<\/p>\n There’s no combined family lodgement. Each family member, including a spouse or children, must lodge their own individual RRV \u2014 Home Affairs can process separately lodged family applications together if you declare the connection, and evidence of immediate family who are Australian citizens or PRs can support your own substantial-ties claim.<\/p>\n Once granted, your RRV is linked digitally to your passport, with no visa label placed in it. Check your expiry date on VEVO (Visa Entitlement Verification Online) before making travel plans. Home Affairs sends a Travel Facility Expiry Reminder to subclass 155 holders, but not while you have a pending RRV application \u2014 another reason not to leave renewal until the last minute.<\/p>\n From the UAE: what this means for you<\/h2>\nFor most of our clients in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, the process itself is location-agnostic \u2014 no travel back to Australia, no consular visa label, no in-person appointment.
