This guide covers the Federal Skilled Trades Program, the Express Entry channel built for electricians, plumbers, welders and other tradespeople, and what a UAE-licensed tradesperson needs to line up first.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cosmos-glance\">\n<h3>At a glance<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) is one of three programs managed through Express Entry, alongside the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) and the Canadian Experience Class, and unlike the FSWP it has no education requirement.<\/li>\n<li>You need at least 2 years of skilled-trade work experience in the 5 years before applying, officially framed as 3,120 hours \u2014 counted only for periods you were properly licensed to do that trade.<\/li>\n<li>You need either a certificate of qualification from a Canadian province or territory, or a valid job offer of at least 1 year full-time from up to 2 Canadian employers.<\/li>\n<li>The language bar is lower than the FSWP: CLB\/NCLC 5 for speaking and listening, CLB\/NCLC 4 for reading and writing.<\/li>\n<li>A separate &#8220;trade occupations&#8221; category has run inside Express Entry&#8217;s category-based selection since 2023 \u2014 related to, but administratively different from, general FSTP eligibility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>What the Federal Skilled Trades Program is for<\/h2>\n<p>The FSTP grants permanent residence based on being qualified in a skilled trade \u2014 one of three programs managed through <a href=\"https:\/\/cosmosimmigration.com\/canada-skilled-migration-visa\">Express Entry<\/a>, alongside the FSWP and the Canadian Experience Class. Unlike the FSWP, it has no education requirement: the FSWP requires proof of Canadian high school equivalency, the FSTP does not. If your career ran through an apprenticeship rather than a degree, this is the program built for you.<\/p>\n<h2>The eligibility checklist<\/h2>\n<h3>Work experience<\/h3>\n<p>At least 2 years of skilled-trade experience in the 5 years before you apply \u2014 3,120 hours on the FSTP&#8217;s own page. Full-time and part-time work can combine; part-time hours can run above or below 15 a week as long as they total 1,560, and more than one part-time job can count. Hours above 30 a week aren&#8217;t counted, and study-period work doesn&#8217;t count at all, unlike the FSWP.<\/p>\n<h3>Where the experience was earned<\/h3>\n<p>It only counts if you were qualified to practise the trade wherever you gained it. Qualified in one country but working in another with different rules? You also had to meet that second country&#8217;s requirements. For UAE-based tradespeople: your UAE experience counts toward the FSTP only for periods you held whatever licence the UAE required for that trade.<\/p>\n<h3>Job offer or certificate of qualification<\/h3>\n<p>You need one of two things: a certificate of qualification from a Canadian province, territory or federal body, proving certification to work that trade in Canada; or a valid job offer of at least 1 year full-time (or the part-time equivalent) from up to 2 Canadian employers. If your target province doesn&#8217;t issue certificates for your trade, a qualifying job offer is required instead.<\/p>\n<h3>Language, funds and admissibility<\/h3>\n<p>CLB\/NCLC 5 for speaking and listening, CLB\/NCLC 4 for reading and writing. Proof of funds is required unless already authorized to work in Canada with a valid job offer. Representative codes on IRCC&#8217;s official pages include welders (72106), electricians (72200\/72201), plumbers (72300), carpenters (72310), and construction millwrights and heavy-duty equipment mechanics (72400\/72401) \u2014 illustrative, not exhaustive. Confirm your own NOC using IRCC&#8217;s official lookup tool first.<\/p>\n<h2>Category-based selection: a separate, faster lane<\/h2>\n<p>Since 2023, IRCC has also run &#8220;category-based selection&#8221; rounds: the Minister sets categories tied to identified economic goals, and Express Entry candidates who fit a category are invited regardless of pool rank. You still need to qualify for one of the three core programs to be in the pool at all \u2014 category rounds supplement, they don&#8217;t replace, the general pool.<\/p>\n<p>Trades has been one of these categories since 2023, alongside health care, education, STEM and transport, with its own occupation list covering roles like welders, electricians, plumbers, carpenters and heavy-equipment mechanics. <strong>Don&#8217;t confuse the two lists<\/strong> \u2014 the category list is used only for category-specific rounds, administratively separate from general FSTP eligibility above; you could qualify for one without the other.<\/p>\n<p>In February 2026, IRCC confirmed rounds would continue for categories in place in 2025, including trades, while adding new ones \u2014 so trades remained an active category into 2026. For 2026, the minimum work experience for renewed categories rose from 6 months to 1 year, gained in Canada or abroad over the previous 3 years. IRCC sets exact criteria per round, so check its live rounds page rather than a past draw.<\/p>\n<h2>Certification and the Red Seal<\/h2>\n<p>A certificate of qualification is issued by the province or territory that governs your trade, after it assesses your training and experience to decide if you can write a certification exam. Contact the trade-regulating body where you plan to live; the Canadian Information Centre for International Credentials (CICIC) can help identify who regulates your trade \u2014 much like you would <a href=\"https:\/\/cosmosimmigration.com\/verify-credentials\">verify credentials<\/a> before applying anywhere.<\/p>\n<p>The Red Seal is a separate layer, often assumed mandatory. It&#8217;s a national-standard partnership between the federal government and the provinces and territories, which remain responsible for apprenticeship and certification. Passing the Interprovincial Red Seal exam adds an endorsement to your provincial certificate, easing moves between provinces. <strong>It is not required for the FSTP<\/strong> \u2014 a plain provincial certificate, or a qualifying job offer, satisfies FSTP on its own. Which trades are designated, and what&#8217;s required, varies by province.<\/p>\n<h2>Provincial routes built around trades<\/h2>\n<p>Some Provincial Nominee Programs run streams specifically for tradespeople. Saskatchewan&#8217;s SINP defines a &#8220;skilled trade&#8221; as an FSTP-eligible occupation also on its In-Demand Occupation List, and a &#8220;skilled tradesperson&#8221; as someone with at least 2 years&#8217; experience in the past 5 in such an occupation. For 2026, Saskatchewan reserved a minimum of 750 nominations for graduates of its own institutions with a priority-sector job offer, including Skilled Trades.<\/p>\n<p>Alberta&#8217;s AAIP runs an Opportunity Stream for foreign workers already in Alberta with a full-time job offer, plus Express Entry Stream draws for &#8220;Construction and skilled trade&#8221; and &#8220;Aviation and skilled trade&#8221; \u2014 a 20 May 2026 Construction draw needed a score of 61, a 24 June 2026 Aviation draw a score of 47. You can&#8217;t apply to Alberta&#8217;s stream directly; you need a Notification of Interest from AAIP first. These figures change often, so verify current numbers on the province&#8217;s site.<\/p>\n<h2>From the UAE: what this means for you<\/h2>\n<p>No official Canadian source addresses UAE trade credentials specifically, and we won&#8217;t pretend otherwise. The rule that applies is the general one above: UAE experience counts toward the FSTP only for periods you were properly licensed to practise the trade here, and certification in Canada still requires an assessment by your target province&#8217;s trade-regulating body \u2014 a province-by-province process, not one national credential body. Don&#8217;t assume a UAE trade licence transfers automatically; no official source says it does.<\/p>\n<p>Run two tracks from Dubai or Abu Dhabi at once: build your Express Entry profile (language test, proof of funds, work-experience records covering the periods you held a valid licence), and contact CICIC and your target province&#8217;s trade body about what an assessment requires. Keep employer letters and licence records organized \u2014 a regulator will want proof of what you were licensed to do, and when. A plain certificate, or a qualifying job offer, satisfies FSTP on its own.<\/p>\n<h3>Will my UAE trade licence transfer directly to a Canadian one?<\/h3>\n<p>No official source confirms automatic recognition.
